    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed the different types of projects i was involved in from HS2 to a university campus' infrastructure. It was a good insight into working life and how different projects are carried out from inception to completion. The office was also a very laid back environment which meant there was little stress when it came to working.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • The colleagues of Arup Nottingham were very welcoming and so i found it very easy to intergrate with the group which meant we not only worked well as a team but also valued one another greatly which led to increased morale. The office was also a very laid back environment which meant there was little stress when it came to working.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I worked within a number of different teams due to the different prijects i was working on in from HS2 to a university campus' infrastructure. Within each project I was given a number of tasks however i eould say i did not fully understand my role in the team other than 'intern'. However this is understandable and I appreciated the different tasks allocated to me along with the appropriate guidance.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Within each project I was given a number of tasks however i would say i did not fully understand my role in the team other than 'intern'. This meant that i was waiting for my superior to be free before allocating me another piece of work. I would have preferred if I was given a large task which was to be completed over the duration of the placement so I could fill these gaps of working with a productive task. However i was never waiting so long as to waste the company's investment into my time.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Now having worked within a wprking environment, i am much more aeare of the practicality of what i am studying at university. This means that i will be able ti follow what future theory with a better understandjng of its uses within the industry. This idea is similar with working on site and in an office and, as i received a site visit while on my placement i will understand some constructability theory that is taught to me at uni.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The placement was very well organised from HR and i received no difficulty in receiving contracts or extension of contract and so on. With respect to the work itself I was managed by a few people who were able to guide me through the placement with cdrtain tasks. However this meant i was dependent on those leaders on giving me work which sometimes lead to poor productivity on my behalf.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The placement was very well organised from HR and i received no difficulty in receiving contracts or extension of contract and so on. With respect to the work itself I was managed by a few people who were able to guide me through the placement with cdrtain tasks. However this meant i was dependent on those leaders on giving me work which sometimes lead to poor productivity on my behalf which could perhaps be attributed to a lesser investment.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I will very much be applying for future jobs with Arup and i am particukarly attracted to the prospect of applying to a specific role within the company rather than the usual fraduate recruitment scheme. The Nottingham office was a a friendly enviroment and i would certajnly consider applying to that office as its location is also ideal being so close to birmingham and leicester

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • The Nottingham office was a a friendly enviroment and i would certajnly consider applying to that office as its location is also ideal being so close to birmingham and leicester. Their was a friendkly social scene with many members going out for drinks and also sports were arranged within the office by certain individuals. It would have been even better if sports had been arranged by the company as well so the invitation was much more open
