    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Very much enjoyed it. It was great in a regional office being able to rotate within the different departments, and so I was able to gain insight into how four teams worked and the type of work they carried out on a day-to-day basis. I was given a lot to do, particularly in the development and valuation teams and a versatile range of work- both commercial and residential property. I was able to go out on several site visits and be shown various different software I hadn't used before. Overall, a well organised internship where I really did learn a lot and feel able to now apply the skills I've learned.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Everyone was very friendly and keen to help. The graduates in particular worked quite closely with me and were keen to show me what to do and how to use various software. I was invited to sit in on meetings and asked by many people about my degree, future plans etc. The directors of each team were also very helpful and gave me work to do each week. The overall office environment was very friendly, and relaxed- there seemed to be a lot of conversation and helping each other out if somebody was having difficulties. This made it very easy to ask if I was unsure about anything.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My supervisor in Birmingham was lovely, very approachable and accommodating- very efficient to sort out any IT problems as well! The supervisors in London were also very easy to get hold of, and keen to hear how we were getting on throughout the internship. We were given presentations on the graduate programme and APC and were visited by someone from the London office in week 3 to discuss our progress. In the final week of my internship, I met with my mentor to discuss how the internship had gone, what I'd learned etc and feedback.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Fairly busy- some teams were quieter than others but during weeks 2+ 3 I didn't have any free time and the days flew by! It was great having the ongoing project set by the London office to keep me occupied if I had any free time. Overall though, I worked on a lot of different reports/ schedules and got to attend various site visits so was pretty busy all day long. People were always willing to set me work if asked and I felt able to, although this often wasn't necessary and I had plenty to do.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Quite a bit, again with some teams I had more responsibility than others. I made calls to other firms, help complete reports and spoke to clients on site visits. I was explained what to do thoroughly before-hand but with being on a Real Estate based degree I was familiar with quite a lot of the work which helped. Obviously the teams are busy and so to an extent you do have to take responsibility and get on with tasks to the best of your ability.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I learned a great deal, as well as developing core skills with regards to communication and teamwork. It was very helpful to be able to use software like Argus and Promap, as well as now knowing how to set out different reports and go about carrying out valuations. I learned a lot about Brexit and it's potential implications on the property market, as well as an overall insight into how a large corporate firm works and the daily tasks completed.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Very friendly, everyone appeared to get along and help each other out. The general atmosphere was relaxed with conversation, socials after work. All the teams I worked with, were great to be part of.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Well organised- I knew exactly where to go and who to ask for on the day I arrived. I was sent details by both the London and Birmingham office and my supervisor in Birmingham was brilliant on the first day with showing me round, making sure I knew what to do. Each week the teams were expecting me and keen to give me work to do. I felt very familiar with how the office worked by the end of my placement.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • We were given several presentations on the APC programme and graduate programme. I was able to speak to a graduate surveyor in London and also with the Graduate recruitment officer. I felt I learned a lot about how the graduate programme worked, the support and opportunities available. I was given a very insightful experience.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • 4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Very appealing. I'd love to work for Savills and will definitely be applying in the near future. I loved the work I was set and the people I met in the Birmingham office.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • I did go out for drinks several times my colleagues after work and was sent invitations to events. I was actually the only surveying intern so in terms of fellow students that was fairly limited.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Much cheaper than London, it was great to get a regional office experience as it's very different. I did find accommodation and travel far more affordable and my commute was easy.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Good bars and pubs, although I didn't go out to any of the nightclubs.

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Not really as it's a much smaller office than London but there were a few webinars I was invited to and drinks after work.
