About You
I really enjoyed the month I spent here - being in a smaller team meant that I got to know everyone across disciplines really quickly and there was a family atmosphere in the office. The work was varied and interesting and built on things I'd already learnt as well as things I hadn't covered before.
The team made me feel very valued, allowing me to get involved with the tasks they were doing as well as creating projects for me so that I could get a better insight into how tasks are completed from inception to completion. Everyone was approachable and checked regularly that I had things to do and understood my jobs .
I was designated a mentor which meant I always had someone to refer to but there were actually numerous people who I formed a close relationship with so that asking questions didn't feel intimidating. Being in contact with the central HR team was also useful in case there were things that my regional office couldn't cover.
They will be very helpful - there is a bit of a gap in my degree concerning residential rather than commercial development which has been my main focus during my time here. It has meant that I will now be in good stead next year when I undertake my property development valuation module as there are various aspects of residential appraisals that I have already covered here.
The Company
There wasn't much of a 'structure' as such apart from a few events that I could tune into through webinars but it was a bit more flexible that way. It meant I wasn't limited in having to work with different members of the team even when there wasn't necessarily any work for me to do. I've covered much more by having a different routine every day.
The atmosphere in the office is really good on my floor and everyone gets on very well which has made fitting in a lot easier. There were also after work events organised for me to get involved in which helped build relationships with my colleagues. There is a good balance between professionalism and not taking life too seriously.
Other than the webinars which allowed you to gain insight into what other teams were doing, which was good in the regional offices where there might only be one department, there was no 'training' as such. It didn't feel particularly necessary though given the time span I was at the company.
It was significantly helpful because you are surrounded by employees who are doing the tasks that you would have the opportunity to carry out as a full time employee. Everyone was very enthusiastic to let me get involved with what they were doing so it was easy to see how I might fit in with the team in the future, and the graduates were helpful in explaining how Savills structure their APC training.
It's hard to say because from mine and the team's perspectives, the culture is very dependent on the office - naturally the central London office with 1400 employees will have a different atmosphere and culture than the office I'm in with 35 people. That said, a lot of the personalities in the office seem to align with the business ethos and they suit the roles they are in.
It is helpful because it's allowed me to understand the consultancy side of the industry and another pathway within the property profession to a much greater depth, but also somewhat more confusing as it has only expanded the choice of things I can do when I graduate. But now I have a good basis to compare other internships to in order to clarify the decision.
Everything Else
Yes, having a small office made the environment easy to meet all the members of the office and after work events made building relationships easier. I also went to another office for a valuation roadshow which meant I was able to meet people from different offices within the region as well as different departments (rural and commercial vals).
Good, and they were on a variety of scales so I could get to know lots of people on the surface or have more in depth conversations with just a couple of people, but they were all on an informal basis. Unfortunately I will be leaving before the department activity day which is a shame because it would have been nice to see the development teams from the Eastern region.
There doesn't seem to be a lot of formal external activities that the team get involved with or it's not obvious. There might be more going on in a larger office but there doesn't seem to be any informal ones at the least, other than those organised on a larger scale. It might mean that there is potential for something to be implemented though.
Definitely but the application process isn't at a particularly convenient time in the middle of exams. I would also definitely recommend choosing a regional office rather than automatically going for London as I feel my relationships have been much stronger as a result, but you still get the benefit of being part of a multinational firm.
