    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed my placement this year. I have been able to complete a wide range of tasks within my role. I have applied a lot of my university knowledge from brand management to finance. I have covered every aspect of marketing within the business including digital, PR and comms.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I was treated as a full member of the team. Here on site everyone is very welcoming and have made me feel as part of the family. I feel I have been trusted with huge tasks and treated as a marketing executive. I didn’t feel like I was treated any different to my manager in terms of respect and responsibility from other team members.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I was fully supported by all staff whenever I needed assistance with a task. I sometimes had to find my own was around a task and take initiative to complete tasks. This was positive as it allowed me to develop myself and I have grown in confidence within my role.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was extremely busy on a daily basis. As I developed and become more familiar with my role and surroundings I took on more tasks. All throughout the placement I have had an ever changing 2-3 page to do lists. This is good as I never got bored and I was never tasks with minor things such as getting tea.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a huge huge huge amount of responsibility within my placement. I feel I have been given tasks people a lot higher than we would normally be trusted to follow through. This was a huge honor and showed me the business valued my work and trusted me. I managed the site website and social media platforms solo. Along with co-managing several other tasks.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I have developed a huge amount of skills and confidence this year. From generic business skills to specific skills to complete my role. I have developed business skills such as Excel and presentations. Developing graphic and technical skills such as SEO (search engine optimization) for websites and InDesign/ Hootsuite/ Powershot program usage.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere in my office is generally very friendly and positive. Around pressing times such as late product launches the atmosphere can get slightly heated but this is just how a business works and it has helped me to develop my people management skills. My manager was always very supportive and good at teaching me how to manage different people.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The overall placement scheme was very well managed and Eaton have a full years plans for interns to train throughout the year prior to you beginning. We also receive a full folder for the program and feedback on all our milestones. I was provided pre-planned jobs for when I started however marketing is an ever changing role and my jobs list changed priorities throughout the year.

  • Eaton fully invest in their interns, they spend a huge amount on a tailored training schedule throughout the year. If you have any further training you would like to partake in they will 9 times out of 10 help to get you the training as long as it will in return benefit the business. Additional to this Eaton provide an ‘Eaton University’ online profile which allows you to complete online tests and training in specific subjects.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • At my site the social aspect was lovely we have monthly football and fancy dress for charity. We also met the other 34 interns on a monthly basis which allowed us to have meals and drinks out whilst all staying in one region for training. As we have around 12 training days at sites around the UK you grow a bond with the other interns and I think I have made lifelong friends.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • In Gloucester the cost of renting is minimal compared to student housing at universities. We have a really nice 3 story clean family house that was lovely for the year costing almost half of my groggy student house. In Cheltenham cost of living is slightly more, however the area is lovely. The cost of a night out or drink in Cheltenham will be similar to any university night in a city are such as Manchester.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The nightlife in Gloucester isn’t amazing however Cheltenham is good. There are plenty of clubs and students in Cheltenham and it is a good night out. I am originally from Manchester and love a good night so I think students will be happy with socializing in Cheltenham which is only a 15 min drive from Gloucester. Mitcheldean is a sparse area and doesn’t have nightlife so I would advise living in Gloucester between the two.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were some little activities you can get involved in such as football, rounder’s and internal events such as charity days. This year I have also been involved in the community group here at Mitcheldean and have been out on community days to help the local hospice. Eaton devote so many man hours a quarter to allow workers to complete charity work within work time.
