    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Overall it was a really good year. I got some really great experience and learnt a lot from my managers. I never hated coming into work and was never sitting around twiddling my thumbs. Some parts of the job were really boring and I completed a lot of menial tasks but overall I enjoyed the experience. I got on really well with all the other placement students and they made the year for me.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Students are not treated with a lot of respect in the office. You are expected to work really hard, doing menial tasks with very little recognition and praise. Whilst it was very clear I had a clear part to pay in the team, I was never really made to feel respected. Due to the high turnover of students, many employees were not concerned with getting to know the students.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I was given relative support and guidance over the year. I knew that if I did have any issues that all my managers would be happy to help however due to the nature of my tasks I was often happy to continue to work alone. All my managers were very understanding about balancing my university work with my placement and offered lots of support on help with work for my dissertation

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was really busy but really enjoyed it. I was given a huge variety of tasks and really felt like I was learning a lot during my year. Initially I felt overwhelmed with the workload but as the year went on I noticed my time management and efficiency skills develop tremendously. If I ever did get too busy, I was given support by other interns which was great.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given quite a lot of responsibility during my placement. In many cases only student's know how to work processes or complete tasks and therefore you are usually left on your own which is a great way to learn. I was given a lot of opportunities to express my opinions and ideas to shape the business which was great and I felt like I made a real difference.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • 3/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The placement was very well organised. We got a really thorough hand over from previous students and so straight from day 1 we knew what we were there to do. All students knew exactly where to go should there be any issue and we were always kept in the loop with any policy. As we stayed in our roles and didn't rotate it was quite a seamless process after handover

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Not a lot at all. You were there to complete tasks that your managers didn't have time to do or didn't want to do. For this reason they weren't really interested in how they could develop you. Bosch are more interested in what they can get our of students than what they can give. There were many training courses throughout the year however these were never offered to students. Despite this I got a lot of help and support from some managers which I am very grateful for

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?

    Subsidised Canteen

    Sports and Social Club

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    Company Parties/Events

    Staff Sales/Staff Shop

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • The social aspect of the placement was probably the highlight. As there are over 60 interns it had a really young/student feel to it. Bosch held regular socials and events to encourage interns to interact and even helped secure living accommodation for us. We went out on a weekly basis to the local club or to central London. By the end of the year we all got really close.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • The cost of living in the area was okay seeing as it was just on the outskirts of London. We paid £430 a month each for a 6 bedroom house. However as there was not much to do in the area we would often go into London on weekends which was really expensive. The placement pays really poorly and many people struggled to keep their finances up.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • 3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yes there were many clubs and socials. There was a running club, a badminton club and a yoga club. Bosch also offered tickets to subsidised events such as the theatre and the opera. As bosch sponsor many events such as Tough Mudder and Tour D'Frace there was always opportunities to attend these which was great.
