The Role
I wouldn't say I enjoyed it, but nevertheless it was a very useful experience for my future career.
Difficult to answer, because 1/3 of the entire staff at the hotel were placement students-meaning we were all in the same boat. The permanent staff did generally appreciate our contributions though.
Many of the supervisors didn't seem very happy about working there, therefore they struggled to motivate and support.
Depended on how busy the hotel was-varied at different times during the week.
At times it felt like if you wanted to make a decision such as refunding a customer you weren't able to do it unless you asked you supervisor first-which gives a bad impression for the hotel.
Good experience of working in a hotel environment
The Company
Generally it was a good atmosphere because again many of the staff were placement students. Other staff were often downbeat about being at work.
HR manager was well organised and gave a good introduction at the start of the placement. Generally there was good understanding of the placement set up.
There were weekly sessions on training within the hotel, however they were often dull and uninteresting. There were however attempts at training staff frequently.
Following my placement, I would be interested to work with the organisation again, simply because I feel like I know the business well enough now that I could fit into another role fairly easily.
The Culture
Simply because many of the staff were placement students-added to the fact that we all lived in the same group of flats-meant there was a very good social scene.
Stratford-upon-Avon is a very expensive place to live and socialise in therefore many events were too expensive for us to take part in.
There was one nightclub in Stratford when my placement started-by the time I finished my placement there was actually no nightclubs. We had to take a taxi to Leamington Spa for any decent nights out-a good 30 minutes away.
Difficult to get into anything outside of work considering I was only there for a year. Once you are properly settled you almost feel like there is no point in starting anything.
