The Role
I have really enjoyed my placement and have had the opportunity to further my experiences I gained on my placement year with Costain. The job has been really interesting. my main critism is the atmosphere in the office has not been as fun as in previous placements.
I do feel valued by my colleagues and got praise when necessary.
My line manager was always willing to help me complete tasks and answer my questions. She would always dedicate time to help me complete the additional placements tasks Costain set.
I had a busy schedule but I enjoyed this as it has meant I haven't been bored. The main struggle was when members of the team were on annual leave - but this is expected.
I feel like i was given enough responsibility to help me develop within my role without feeling overloaded.
The skills I have learnt will definitely help me if I secure a site engineers role when I graduate. The project management skills I have developed will definitely help me to complete my group dissertation next year.
The Company
The atmosphere was dull at times but this was mainly due to the small number of people in the office. Additionally there were two site offices - the other site office had a funner atmosphere.
The placement was well set up, although it took a while for the company to send through the contract details. My first day went well although i did not have a computer for the first week of my job.
The placement was only ten weeks and there was therefore not much time to book training. However on my placement year i attended a large variety of training courses.
Travel loan
I would happily work for the company again.
The Culture
There was only one other palcement student, we went for lunch a couple of times but this was hard as he was based in another office. I went for meals with the site team a couple of times which was a good way to meet different members of the site team
The cost of living was very high although i was paid subsistence which just about covered the cost. Socialising was very expensive as the project was based in central London.
I didn't experience the nightlife.
I attended some volunteering activities which were really fun. In terms of sports etc there were no activities.
