The Role
I enjoyed my work placement with Hoare lea at their Bristol office. There was a wide variety of work and a friendly office atmosphere, with social trips as well. However sometimes there wasn't quite enough work to do or no one was available to provide sufficient help, and this slightly decreased from the enjoyment.
I felt valued for the work I did, completing lots of different pieces of work for different people in the team on many different projects. Occasionally I was given slightly boring/admin tasks but I suppose as the least experienced member of the team I should be the one to do them!
I was assigned to a Graduate to mostly assist me due to a very large team with a very busy Team Leader, this was mostly sufficient support but due to summer holidays sometimes many people were out of office so less guidance was available.
I was very busy at the start, this dipped a little in the middle of my placement due to colleagues being on holiday/ in different offices etc but picked up again near the end, as I asked different team members for work.
Fair amount of responsibility in the work that I was given, for example created heat gain models and collected results to decide on sizing fan coil units to cool apartments in a new high rise apartment block. Responsible for contacted suppliers, manufacturers, architects to obtain whatever information wanted by the team.
Gained skills in AutoCAD and HEVACOMP software, communication skills liasing with architects, manufacturers, other team members, general consultancy experience and managing several pieces of work at the same time/ time management-all beneficial, not so much in my studies but more for after university.
The Company
Very friendly, supportive, though very busy
Not especially organised in terms of work overall as such possibly due to nature of consultancy work and projects, but my starting in the company was well organised and I was generally assigned work to keep me busy, taken on a couple of site visits and attended a couple of meetings with manufacturers.
Gave me use of AutoCAD software, attended a CPD lunchtime lecture, offers of a return to the office in the future
Company Parties/Events
Fairly appealing, I think working for the company as a graduate would be quite a lot more interesting and varied than working as a placement. However the whole office seems to be under a high workload with many doing overtime every week, while apparently the salary is not the highest in the industry.
The Culture
There were several other placement students in the office at the same time as me which was great, there were also a couple of team/ office socials which were a lot of fun too.
Bristol is fairly expensive
Good, Bristol is a great city
A few sports teams but not much if you're not into sport
