    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Grant Thornton definitely made it enjoyable - we had a day and night in London with all the interns from around the country and a 2 day stay at the training facility Bradenham Manor. The work was made fun because all the people I worked with were really nice and sociable.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt a lot more valued than I thought I would - I was given proper auditing work and a lot of responsibility in talking to clients alone. This gives you a proper experience of what the job is actually like.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I made goals at the start of my internship and then a meeting with my manager half-way through and at the end. I felt like I could go to my manager at any time and all of the people I worked with in different teams were really helpful and supported me as an intern.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • It varied day-to-day, I was only in the office for a few days. I spent most of my time at client sites completing audits, so I usually always had work to do unless I had to wait for someone to teach me something. In the office it depended how much work other colleagues had to give you, but there was only a few times when I didn't have much work.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I worked as if I was a trainee accountant, so I was given small parts of the audit to complete on my own, which felt like a lot of responsibility. I had to speak to clients regularly on my own which was a really good thing.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The technical audit training is only really beneficial for being an accountant. However, the client exposure was really good to develop confidence and skills in working with clients. We also had a 2 day presentation workshop and had to give a presentation at the end of the internship so this gave me really good skills. The job will not necessarily help my Economics degree but it has given me a lot of skills for outside of university and for future jobs.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The Birmingham office is all open plan and so it was quite relaxed and friendly. Although everyone is working you can still chat to each other. The desks are also 'hot-desks' so you can sit anywhere and with different people every day which is good to get to know more people.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • I think it was well organised, on our first day in the office we were given a plan of what we would be doing each day and which clients we were going to. We had to speak to each manager for when we went to clients to sort out travelling there so not everything was handed to us but I don't think it should be!

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I think Grant Thornton invested a lot in us, we had a paid trip and overnight stay in London to meet the other interns and we met the CEO. We also had a 2 day workshop on presentation skills at Bradenham Manor. I learnt a lot from my internship and the firm definitely made sure it was an enjoyable and useful experience.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Sports and Social Club

    International Travel

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Definitely appealing, it was a really great place to work and there are a lot of perks which you wouldn't get in a big 4 accountancy firm. I have been offered a graduate job and will be taking it.

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There was definitely a good social aspect between the interns as we met them in London and also at Bradenham. In the office we went out for lunches and drinks with our colleagues occasionally. As I wasn't in the office very much there wasn't much chance for this. While I was there we had the office engagement day which included a team sports day and a bbq and free bar afterwards which was a great social event.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I lived at home while I was on my placement but Birmingham is a great city and you can definitely live there for quite cheap - you have the perks of a big city without the London costs!

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Birmingham nightlife is good, there's a lot of different places to go. In the area where the office is there a quite a few different bars and restaurants which are great to go to after work.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Not really during my internship as we weren't there for long enough! But I know they have a great social club with different events and also a lot of different sports and other teams outside of work. During our internship we also did a fundraising challenge for Birmingham Children's Hospital.
