The Role
It was absolutely fantastic! It was the perfect opportunity to gain new skills and experience working within the charity sector.
From the day one, I was welcomed into the team. There were regular birthday celebrations and team lunches taking place and to top it off we went for a christmas outing to winter wonderland:) I received fantastic recognition for the work I did and valuable feedback throughout the placement.
I was given a dedicated mentor who provided me with support on a continual basis- every week we would have a one to one. The whole team was supportive and I always had someone to turn to if in need of guidance!
I was given specific projects to work on and felt that there was always something to be getting on with.
Tremendous amounts! I was given complete responsibility for the main project I was working on and it was exciting for me in that the workshops had only just launched when I joined the team.
I have gained so much from this internship - to think I could barely remember how to use microsoft outlook on my first day in the placement! Gaining experience and confidence in the workplace was invaluable for me and I know it will hold me in good stead in the future.
The Company
Very welcoming and relaxed atmosphere.
We had a full two day induction when we joined the charity and gained the most comprehensive overview of all the different departments within Cancer Research UK. I felt valued straight away! Throughout we had a committed work placement executive to keep us updated and to ensure that we were still enjoying our time in our roles. There was even an interim CV training day and to top it off, the network of over 40 interns provided the perfect social group!! The organisation was spot on!
As I say, there was a CV training day which was brilliant for receiving guidance from HR advisors and sharing insight with other interns. My team were equally keen to help me gain new skills and shadow aspects of their work.

The internship led to a temporary role in the team and now I'm a permanent member. I've been with them for all most a year since my internship and I've loved every minute!
The Culture
There was a good social scene... everyone was invited to the social outings and on many occasions I went for dinner with the interns.
As it was unpaid, it wasn't cheap but we did have our travel and lunch reimbursed so I didnt find it too much of a problem! Saying that the experience outweighed the cost for me.
I didn't really have much time for it as I was working Saturdays too but London nightlife was there for the taking!
I went along to quite a few things during my internship and I'm sure there were many more I could of taking advantage of.
