The Role
Absolutely loved this placement. I had a really high level of responsibility and a really varied job role.
My colleagues were all really friendly and welcoming, helping me to settle in really quickly. They regularly told me that I was doing a good job and I was invited to work social events and team lunches.
I was assigned a mentor with whom I had regular meetings and worked closely with. The Head of Recruitment set me various targets so I knew what I needed to achieve and by when, and he always thanked me for the work I put in which made me feel like a valued member of staff.
It was a little quiet in the beginning, but once the organisation of the events was up and running I always had plenty to be getting on with.
My mentor was the project manager for the two recruitment events I was working on, and he delegated a lot of responsibility to me, which I really appreciated.
I feel very confident that the skills I gained over the course of my placement will be highly beneficial to me whatever career path I choose.
The Company
Everyone was really friendly.
Excellent. We had a two day induction at the start which gave us a great insight in to the charity, and we received CV and interview training half way throught the internship. We were all assigned mentors who were there to help us throughout the duration of our internship, and the Internship Coordinator was always on hand to help whenever we needed him.
As well as CV and interview training, we were also given the opportunity to attend development workshops. I attended a workshop on 'Giving and receiving feedback' run by the Learning and Development team which I found highly beneficial.
Several interns got jobs at Cancer Research UK after the internship, and I will definitely be checking out what opportunities they have when I get back from travelling next year.
The Culture
Great. We often had lunch together and went out for drinks on a few occassions. We also did a lot of fundraising as a group. A few of us organised and hosted a pub quiz for our colleagues at Cancer Research UK to raise money for the charity. It was very successful and a lot of fun.
It was central London so it was a bit pricey. Cancer Research UK subsidised my travel in to work which was really helpful.
Lots of volunteering and fundraising opportunities. There's always some kind of charity event to get involved with.
