The Role
Not particularly - I loved the other interns but the project I was given wasn't at all in the sector that I'd signed up for. When I got to Tesco, I ended up working in a completely different division from what I'd signed up for, and what was advertised on the website. The general consensus amongst the interns was the projects were very arbitrary and, on the whole, poorly organised.
Not at all. During my first two weeks, I was mostly sat at a desk with nothing to do as they kept saying 'someone will give you a job soon, you're fine to just wait'. I expected, and really wanted to, be making a genuine contribution but I was made to feel more like I was a nuisance. Even when I eventually took the project into my own hands (delivering in a few weeks something that IT said would take a year), I didn't feel I was at all valued or recognized by my colleagues
I've heard other managers were better, but I didn't really get any support from mine at all - instead I was passed on to a grad in another division to look after me, but she didn't really know what she was supposed to do. I had to largely drive any contribution I made myself.
Very busy towards the end because I asked to take on more responsibility, but for the first few weeks painfully slow. Other interns said the same.
I ended up taking a lot of responsibility by the end but, again, only because I made it so. At the beginning I wasn't really given anything to do. Other interns had slightly better experience.
I learned some fairly useful skills, particularly with IT. Also opportunity to present was fairly useful, wish it was more high-profile though.
The Company
Loved the other interns and other industrial placement people. In general a fairly relaxed atmosphere, fairly young staff. However, not as fast paced or exciting as, say, a city firm.
Fairly appalling. Really well organised interview process left great impression, so all the interns were really disappointed. Nothing set up on arrival (I was in Online, and it took two weeks to get a computer set up!!). HR were incredibly unresponsive to queries, we were taxed on our pay when we told finance we weren't supposed to be, the store placement didn't even know we were coming, our sign-off presentations were supposed to be organised by HR but they weren't, very little support from line manager, and it took Tesco 9 weeks to get back to us about the result of our placement (they said it would take two). Overall, very disappointed.
Some - they had a few 'development days', some were very good but some were fairly arbitrary. I felt the Early Development Team did a good job with what they had but it didn't seem like there was much company-wide backing of the Interns.

Not good at all - with everything that's going on at the moment, it seems the grads are going to be one of the first to go. I wouldn't say jobs are guaranteed at all and, to be honest, the poor organisation of the internship doesn't bode well.
The Culture
Yes! Excellent, I really really loved the other interns. We had lunch together every day and met up regularly in the evening - to be honest, the best part of the job.
Outside of London, so reasonably cheap, but not a lot of choice. London is 20 mins away on the train though, so you can easily get there.
A few pubs, not a lot of choice - again, London 20 mins by train so definitely do-able
Not a lot organised by Tesco - the Gym was pretty decent for it's size though, and they ran a sports day and a Graduate Ball.
