    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed the work that was given, with lots of responsibility and enjoyable work given to me. I was properly involved in the projects, in face-to-face meetings and writing of proposals. I was given a lot of time by managers to train me and I learnt a lot during the placement that I could bring back and apply to my degree.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • My colleagues definitely valued my contributions and encouraged me to speak up in meetings. I was given a lot of responsibility and work to do and was thanked for everything I produced.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I had a peer buddy who was more of a friend to me during the process and there for me to ask simpler questions and help with my networking. I also had someone who helped me achieve my targets and made sure I was keeping up with what I wanted to achieve.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I always had work to do as I was spread over a number of projects. If I ever had spare time I could always ask a colleague if they needed help with their project. Sometimes there was gaps when you were waiting for work to get back to you, but that is just due to the type of work that economic consulting is.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a lot of responsibility, producing my own spreadsheets, reports and attending meetings. My colleagues trusted me with analysing the data and producing good work.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Not only did I use my degree in the job but my ecnoomic theory and econometric analysis improved a lot. I got to grips with the software STATA that I will be using in my third year project in which I used general method of moments models and instrumental variables. I also learnt a whole knew model - the logit model - which I am beginning to learn about in my studies this year.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere in the office was very hard working. Everyone was very friendly but there was little talking in day-to-day life, with everyone hard at work - the economic floor on the third floor was known as the studious silent floor. However we had pizza and wine/beer fridays once a month which was lovely and very lively.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The work placement was set up quite well, a few of us had to wait a while for our projects to start up or they didn't start up at all - but this was due to the type of work which can be very unpredictable. There also could have been more events all together as didn't see much of interns from other departments.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • We had two days training at the beginning but little actual training was done apart from that. We had a few days where we learnt more about the company and did an external dragons den event.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I was pleased to be employed by the company, starting next September where we have two months of training where we can meet fellow graduates.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • The economic interns were not good at socialising, rarely going to any drinking events interns organised. However it was better among the other interns and we all got along and went to dinners and out together.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Being in central london the cost of living was quite expensive but we would often go to peoples houses which is free.

  • The nightlife in London is great, we would often go out in Shoreditch.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There weren't many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work which I was disappointed in. I was hoping there may be some charity events or external events organised by PwC. THough obviously there are many events in London that we can get involved in.
