The Role
The experience overall has certainly been worthwhile, and I've learnt a lot not just about the work of the policy and public affairs directorate, but also the rest of the charity.
My mentor was friendly, approachable, and had a lot of useful advice to give.
There were a few days initially when I could have done with more work, however in the last few weeks I was kept very busy, due in large part to the fact the the party conferences were drawing ever closer.
I was lucky enough to be given responsibility for the completion of a large project to that I know will be useful to the policy team in their work.
I picked up a few tips from the CV and interview skills training, however more than anything the internship has given me an insight into policy and public affairs within a large charity organisation.
The Company
There is a strong work ethic within the policy and public affairs teams at Cancer Research UK. The office also has a rather 'serious' academic feel to it, and is perhaps quieter than other departments.
Very well-organised. The Internship Executive kept up to date with new developments and opportunities throughout.
As part of the internship we had CV and interview skills training, though not much beyond that. There were however training opportunities elsewhere within the organisation.
I will definitely be keeping my eyes open for future job opportunities within the organisation.
The Culture
Given that interns were spread over a number of offices, it was a difficult to socialise with interns outside of the building I was in. Within my building however interns did socialise at lunchtimes.
Expensive!
There are a number of pubs, bars and clubs in and around Holborn.
We were kept informed about volunteering opportunities throughout.
