The Role
This placement involved a 10 week internship at the London Bridge Station Enhancement Project as a placement Engineer. The internship was extremely insightful and has provided me an invaluable introduction to the Civil Engineering industry from the standpoint of a contractor. I value the breadth of experience that I gained, feel more confident entering into future internships and feel driven to excel in the industry.
Everybody involved in the engineering team (including site, section and senior engineers) was extremely helpful and approachable. Time was made to assist in any queries I had and I soon felt integrated into the team.
All members of the engineering team were enthusiastic about providing support and guidance with any questions or queries. Regular review meetings were undertaken to ensure the appropriate guidance was provided and I achieved the most from the placement.
Due to the nature of engineering, some days were quiet. However the majority of the week was spent on site or in the office with tasks to be completed.
A good amount considering it was the first placement I have undertaken. I hope to have more responsibility during subsequent placements.
The training and skills developed are complimentary to what is required at university. Due to the pace of work, time management and organisation skills were key which are invaluable.
The Company
The office was large and generally relaxed, everyone was focussed on completing their work.
The placement was very well organised, information relating to the placement was easy to find and contact with Costain was simple. It was set up to ensure that interns always have a focus due to having supplementary tasks to complete in parallel to the site work.
I completed an safety and environment training course during my internship.
Travel loan
The company are one of the largest UK Contractors and have excellent future prospects when it comes to growth of the business. As a result I am attracted to the potential of becoming involved in the business where opportunities exist to develop my career quickly.
The Culture
Central London is relatively expensive to live and socialise.
Excellent nightlift in Central London.
