    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Overall, I can confidently say that this summer’s placement has enormously benefited me in terms of gaining valuable real life experience both in terms of technical insight and working relationships. I was extremely lucky to be under the guidance of people who knew very well what they were doing and inspire me towards best practice only.

  • My line manager bought me breakfast every now and then. Enough said.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I was very impressed and pleased with the professionalism and kindness with which all the people that I interacted with had treated me, regardless of their company “allegiance”.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Being based in London and taking into account that my responsibilities ranged from conducting site visits, doing M&E Works Analyses or getting involved in the handover process, I can say that I was quite busy on a daily basis.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Quite a lot. My placement also came with a great degree of flexibility, so I was allowed a lot of independent thinking which permitted me to concentrate on areas where I thought the project needs developing.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • This summer’s placement has provided me with incredible insight with regards to the management of working relationships, internal politics and the process of real life project decision making. Moreover, I got the apply theoretical knowledge learnt at university in a practical framework.

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The London Power Tunnels is a Costain-Skanska Joint Venture. It was really fun to work with staff from both companies and also National Grid's representatives.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • I had weekly meetings with my line manager to monitor and assess my progress and performance. This provided me with plenty of guidelines in order to ensure that I'm developing in the right direction.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The company has invested me quite a lot, taking the care to place me under the careful guidance of very competent people who knew very well what they were doing and from whom there was a lot to learn.

  • Very appealing given that my roles can be so varied. Salary and benefits are good.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes. Although our daily duties varied a lot, our interactions were always productive and the general atmosphere was very good.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • London is generally expensive but the company kicked in with various allowances and covered for my travel expenses. That helped me a lot.

  • London offers endless opportunities.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were a few company social events every now and then.
