The Role
The Morgan Stanley internships are thoroughly organised and thought out. As a result, I learnt a very large amount about technical aspects of the job, the company itself and the people that work there.
Everyone in my team was friendly and we all mostly ate together at lunch, which is pretty rare in these kind of companies.
Everyone seemed ready to answer my queries, especially my assigned buddy/project manager
The project I was assigned was quite sizeable, so there was always something to improve or new features to implement. However, I never felt overwhelmed by the amount of work.
I was given one particular project to work on, so he days varied between research, hard coding and bug fixing. The project will eventually go into production, meaning the London DBA team (and perhaps the global team) will be using this tool. I had full responsibility for this particular project, but little outside of it.
We were given a first half-week of introductions to the company's divisions, in-house technologies before starting to work. This proved useful, but may not extend outside of the firm. However, the technical knowledge acquired during the placement was priceless.
The Company
People are obviously work-driven, but can also relax and laugh during quieter times of the day.
Recruiting seems to be very important at Morgan Stanley, as the whole internship was carefully organised. HR keep in touch and provide reviews throughout the 10 weeks, which gives an insight to your performance and some useful feedback
There were regular seminars and talks by senior colleagues. The firm-wide courses were available for interns if the manager agreed, but none of relevance were running during my time there.
Subsidised/Company Gym
The team seemed enthusiastic and pleased with my performance, although offers are made a few weeks after we leave.
The Culture
There was an active mailgroup where interns communicated and plenty of bars outside the office for people to socialise.
Living is quite expensive, so most people commute a bit. Socialising is not cheap, but not very expensive either.
Plenty of pubs, but that's as far as it goes.
Interns were always invited to company/division events such as the Corporate Challenge, or the Dragon Boat racing.
