    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • It was a fantastic experience in a great environment. A really encouraging culture of trying to be your best.

    5/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I worked in a relatively small team which meant I was able to accumulate a lot of respect and responsibility quickly.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • An absolutely brilliant line manager who genuinely cared about my development and went the extra mile to help. An equally good contact manager who was always there when needed. I also had access to senior managers and management through my role. They were also very supportive.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • There are always going to be slow days. But in those days it is good to try and take your initiative and be innovative. Perhaps do some investigative work or solve small problems that have been bugging you for a while. If in doubt ask for more work.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • In my role I was given a huge amount of responsibility. I feel that it still had to be earned though before you were given it which is a fair arrangement. By the end of the placement year I was leading a €1.2 million project abroad so there are plenty of opportunities to do fantastic things.

    5/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Since arriving back in my final year I feel it has helped me immeasurably in the way I now conduct my studies. I am much more aware about how the theory I am learning can relate to a corporate setting. Also my interpersonal skills have developed significantly. I think confidence is definitely improved the most whilst on placement. Unilever is a fantastic environment do gain experience and skills.

    5/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Working in a small team meant that I often was alone in the office on a Friday. However the rest of the office atmosphere was great.

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Our intake for Business Technology and Management was the first year to offer placements in this function so there were a few minor hiccups. Beyond that it was organised very well.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • They invest a lot of time, money and effort into making sure you develop over the year. It is however an element of give and take. If you put the the effort in to developing yourself you will be rewarded at Unilever. You need to make sure you grasp every opportunity.

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    Sports and Social Club

    5/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I have been accepted onto the Unilever Future Leaders Programme after a successful placement. Unilever tend to value those who have gone through the placement scheme and/or the graduate scheme.

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes - Most of us lived in the SW London area (Both industrial placement and summer internship students) so we enjoyed going out regularly

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Living in London is notoriously expensive but as long as you do not expect to live in a Palace then the Salary provided more than covers the cost of living and leaves a bit left over to do as you wish.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Living in Wimbledon we could be in central London in 20 minutes. London nightlife is diverse and plentiful. However most of it is pretty expensive.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • If you wanted to activities outside of work then you could. There are sports teams and community/charity projects which are all readily available.

    5/5
