    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Unfortunately I did not enjoy this placement. This was primarily because of the fact it had me doing [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] Excel work on a daily basis. [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] The Excel work itself was not challenging.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Colleagues were somewhat welcoming to me. They listened to what I had to say but generally were not that interested in my concerns. They did not sit with me at lunch, which left me alone a lot of the time.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My supervisor really only advised me on my projects. He gave me nothing in the way of potential future career advice, or what it is like to work at the company for a substantial amount of time like he did (something like 15 years there).

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • All days were full 9-5 with Excel work. We were given breaks for lunch etc. but for the most part I was always doing something somewhat productive. At times there was nothing to do - but I used this time to talk to other workers.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a fair amount of responsibility during the placement. It mostly involved ensuring that all of my work was completed on time, as well as giving a presentation at the end of the internship regarding the progress made and what I have learnt.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I definitely developed my skills in Excel. These are skills for life. This is because Excel is used so heavily in firms of all different industries. I have become a certified Excel master! Otherwise not many other skills were provided.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions]were standard office workers who::: worked in a very pragmatic fashion to achieve their project objectives for the day. There was never any excitement.

    2/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • It was well organised in the sense that I almost constantly had work to do. I was shown my supervisor very quickly and orientation was generally well done. Definitely knew what to do very quickly - this made it an easier process overall.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • They did not invest a great deal in me. Besides teaching me how to harness Excel's full potential, they did not do anything that was particularly useful otherwise. The perks included were standard and generally what you would expect from a firm of this size and stature.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Having seen most of what they have to offer and becoming a real employee for a few months puts me in a good position for a job at the firm. I was not offered a contract to sign unfortunately. Perhaps this is not standard protocol.

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There were a few company parties and parties held by employees which I had the opportunity to attend. That being said, they were few and far between. I expected there to be more socialising events and more students with whom I could socialise! There was only 3 of us!

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Rent in the area was decent. Transport was extremely expensive although I was reimbursed for this and travel to and from the different retail locations I visited when I was not in the office. Social life was very good, with many clubs nearby.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Nightlife was particularly good. There were many nightclubs nearby and places to go out for drinks. That said, scheduling sometimes did not permit this. Furthermore there was not many students to go out with, which meant that going out was not particularly enjoyable.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were opportunities to go out and get involved with the many networks the firm has. These include LGBT networks, ethnic-networks etc. I did not personally get involved with these as my scheduling was quite hectic.
