The Role
I enjoyed working for Corus Strip Products in Llanwern. The work was interesting, other colleagues helpful and was also encouraged to give my opinion. Working in a steel works can be an facinating and exciting work place.
The majority of the colleagues were helpful and willing to give up their time to help me in any way. I was assigned a manager who treated me well and was always ready to give me work and extra responsibilities.
Only small amount of support given by the business function manager. However, the human reasourses department are always ready to deal with any problems/queries. I had four quarterly reviews with a HR manager where your progress, happiness, workload etc are discussed.
As an undergraduate I was given the right balance of work. The work was challenging but reallistic. Involvement in more projects/work can be gained by talking to other colleagues and offering help. I was never put under a large amount of pressure of work and therefore it is up to you to motivate yourself to complete work and get involved in other projects.
I was given a large amount of responsibility by my supervisor in the projects I was working on. In addition to the work I was also responsible for dealing and managing contractors which is an important factor of the job.
While on my placement I developed my knowledge in many areas such as machines and drives, PLC's, electronics, power transmission as well as various business issues. I was also encouraged to attend many training courses on various subjects.
The Company
Atmosphere varied during my placement depending on how the business function was performing.
Overall scheme was very good. Started with a three day induction, and had to attend four quarterly reviews. Was assigned a supervising engineer who sets work etc.
Scheme started with three day induction. Various training courses were offered to me during the year such as PLC programming, health and safety courses and crane operation. However, permanent staff, as expected, were given priority for the courses.

Company Parties/Events
During the end of my placement I was offered sponsorship which I accepted. Package consists of £1500 per university year remaining and a summer placement if more than one year remains. You are under no obligation to join the company after graduating.
The Culture
There was quite a good social scene between the other students. However, since I lived at home during my placement I didnt participate as much as I could have.
Lived at home so very little cost. Even though the business is located in Llanwern, Newport, most students decided to live in Cardiff where rent and living costs are reasonable. Approximately £240 pcm for a room in a house.
The nightlife in cardiff is very good. Many pubs, bars, clubs etc as well as many big sporting events and festivals.
There was a business football team but not many other out of work activities.
