The Role
At first working in a new location far away from home and my comfort zone proved to be a struggle because of the different characters I came across, but within a few weeks I was able to adapt to the role and start enjoying my work.
Due to the nature of the job as well as the difference in cultures I noticed that I was treated like I was part of the family and I instantly felt comfortable with all my team members.
Communication between myself and management started out to be very effective and efficient, but with time I noticed that I was being given positive responses to my queries and requests, but most of the time even though management would agree to my request, they would not actually fulfil their promises.
My work load fluctuated from the beginning of my placament, and as my supervisors changed, I noticed that at several points, most team members would rather hug all the work, leaving me less busy and sometimes under-utilised.
At the start of my placement, I was given jobs to carry out, but the main responsibility for the important jobs seldom came my way, except during the last few months before I finished my placement.
I have acquired a huge amount of computing skills, and believe that this would come in very handy during my final year. I have also learnt the huge importance of communication in every aspect of an individual's life. I have definitely become more confident and organised with regards to handling work load, which is a factor which I am sure to come across in my final year.
The Company
It was always very lively and exciting. There was a close-knit atmosphere at all times.
I had recieved an outline at the start of the programme, but that was all it was: an outline, because most of the time there was a struggle to provide me with jobs to carry out.
In terms of my actual placment, I do not feel that much was invested in my training and development. For instance when I took an interest in attending a few courses which were advertised, my request was immediately put down by my supervisor, and this instantly killed my motivation.
With the level of previous placement students who return to teh company, I believe that they might have sometime to offer future graduates, which is in huge contrast to what they offer their placement students during their placements.
The Culture
There was a natural divide amongst the placment students because of our different tastes, but I made very good friends with most of the other students.
I lived in Chester, and I noticed that because of my salary and the fact that I had to commute with the irreguar public transport, it was quite an expensive placement for me. The rent was literally almost half my salary combined with commuting costs.
I am not really a night person.
The opportunities that arose where not really of interest to me. There were always a wide range of activities for students to get involved in.
