    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I enjoyed working for such an amazing charity in Cancer Research UK, where I met some great and inspirational people, able to feel valued and welcome. Importantly, I was able to acquire and develop skills and experience of working in a large organisation, input new ideas and strategies to help drive online sales and get involved in a intern - fundraising event all to help bring forward the day when all cancers are cured.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • The colleagues both within my team and department were very friendly and welcoming in helping me settle into my role. I was pleased to have been given inductions on their role/ team and how it fit in within the overall trading department.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My manager was very supportive and friendly towards giving insights on the role of E Commerce and using new applications i.e. Magento, Campaign Commander. I was pleased that my opinions and ideas were valued and were aware of the key skills that I wanted to develop.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was relatively busy with tasks / projects that had a mix of research, data analysis and innovation, e-mail campaigns, maintain the running of the online shop along. As I had a strong interest in branding, I was able to assist the brand team with an insights project that involved researching examples of how other charity brands third sector execute clarity, both internally and externally and ways to innovative the CRUK brand.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given enough responsibility that allowed me to gain an insight into all areas of the ecommerce marketing department and projects which were generally stimulating and fun.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I was able to acquire and develop relevant skills i.e. communication, interpersonal, digital, presentation and build commercial awareness, that has made me confident in applying these skills within a commercial environment.

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • There was a great a working atmosphere and the dress code was smart / causual. I thoroughly enjoyed the working environment and everyone was very welcoming.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship scheme had a very clear structure and roles outlined. The volunteering team were very helpful in assisting me with training sessions covering CV, Cover Letters and presentations. All the interns were given a two - day induction consisting of presentations and workshops from departments all across the charity, aiming to give you a broad overview of the diverse work CRUK carries out in order to beat cancer sooner.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • My team really allowed me to get involved and attend all workshops and sessions. This really helped me develop and understand more about the industry I hope to be in when I finish university. I also was given a couple workshops to help me on my prospects and CV.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I was able to gain access to internal jobs and feel strongly that my employment prospects have definitely improved of being able to land a full - time job and adapt quickly to new working environment.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • All the interns were able to get together for a fundraising event, we were invited to lunch and drinks during special events and

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • As I live in London, I was able to communte to work easily and there were plenty of places to eat out within Angel.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • I was able to get involved in an intern - fundraising event, selling cupcakes and biscuits and we had raised over £190.00. I was also lucky enough to participate in a user - testing session to assist with the digital team on plans to improve the Cancer Research UK website.
