The Role
I was given lots of responsibility which meant I was busy for a lot of the time. This meant I learnt a lot in the time that I was with the company and was able to further my own personal skills a considerable amount as well.
I was made to feel extremely welcome from my first day with HP. Upon starting, my team introduced themselves and I had 1-2-1 sessions with each of them to learn about their roles individually. They then all offered their knowledge and time to me by allowing me to ask any questions that I may have had then or in the future.
Although my team was based all over the world (with my manager in the USA), I felt like I was supported as best as possible considering the location differences. Although this was a difficult part of my internship, I learnt a lot from it which helped me with working individually, as well as part of a team.
My work mainly resolved around releases and followed a time line calendar which was produced by myself and my colleague. This meant that I was able to have control around my workload and there were periods of extremely busy times due to these releases. However, I never felt bored or completely overworked, although I was challenged at times which I found was part of the learning experience.
Being the only member of my team in my office (and 1 of 2 in the UK), I was given a lot of responsibility from my first day with HP. Having to consider when my work needed to be completed, organise my workload and ensuring that I kept in constant contact with my team.
My experiences have developed myself as a person, as well as my skills. Needing to challenge myself definitely helped with this and without my responsibilities, I probably would have never have been able to have to confidence to do things such as present to large numbers of people etc.
The Company
I was based in Bristol which is a relatively quiet office, where several people tended to work from home. However, it was still a friendly environment with areas for coffee breaks and the ability to strike up conversations with people.
The initial process of interviewing etc was extremely seamless. I did however, encounter a few problems at the beginning of my internship which I was forced to overcome myself. However, throughout the internship, there were set tasks such as deciding goals etc which helped with the process.
The HP University is a great place to be able to pick up training sessions as and when you would like. You are not restricted whatsoever as most of these courses are web-based training sessions. I thought this was a great part of the learning experience and allowed me to touch on certain skills which I did not necessarily think I would be able to during my internship.
