    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed my time at RBS and found it very valuable. The skills that I have developed and opportunities that I have been exposed to have made this internship very enjoyable. The medium between work and fun was achieved through a range of external activities as well as being welcomed by all members of RBS.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Whilst on my various rotations I feel as if I have been welcomed and valued by my colleagues. They have helped me when needed and made the transition to working life much easier. RBS has a staff friendly reputation and this has become evident throughout my time here. The people at RBS have made my time here much more enjoyable.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My supervisor has been very helpful. Constantly making sure that I have enough work and introducing me to the relevant people. HR were also very helpful, answering any questions and making sure that we are constantly aware of any events and upcoming opportunities.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • At times I feel as if I could have been set more work whilst others I felt as if I had too much work to do in one day. I think it was dependent on how much work my desk had to offer and this was very dependent on market activity.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • These varied between my rotations. On one rotation I was given large amounts of responsibility from taking minutes to presenting minutes. However at times that I did not have much responsibility it was because there were not tasks available that would grant me this.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • This internship has been incredibly beneficial to me in terms of expanding and building that skills and knowledge that I have. From Excel skills to Bloomberg skills - there has been a range of opportunities that has allowed further experience to be gained. Skills that are less quantifiable for example building up confidence has also been developed to a much greater level. Such skills have become skills that I will use on an everyday basis whilst market related skills will prove to assist me further in employment. Although my degree is a non-financial specific degree the skills that I will take away from this Internship will be beneficial as my presentation, computer and personal skills have all been built upon.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The environment, although a work one, was enjoyable and made my time as RBS fly past. The people were friendly and although on occasion the physical work set was sometimes slow (due to the lack of market activity) the people were always willing to help out and let you shadow them. As an intern I feel that the atmosphere made my time here much more enjoyable and pleasant.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship ran very smoothly and was well organised. From external events to mini rotations within the work place - interns were constantly made aware of happenings and schedules. Not too sure about the CSR aspect of RBS as it is time consuming and it is difficult to get all members of the group to work together when on different work hours.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Some of the training that we were offered was - Bloomberg Training, Excel Training and 1 week training at the start. It was clear that RBS spends a lot of time investing in Interns and it was all very valuable training. Various talks and lectures all supported this. Internal events organised by individuals on the desk also illustrated how much time people are willing to invest in us.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Company Parties/Events

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Very appealing. I would love to be offered a job at RBS as I enjoy the working environment and the people.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Although it was slightly forced to start with in terms of 'organised fun' it all paid off. As a intern class we socialise a lot together and enjoy one another's company. Grads organise events on a weekly basis which encourages us to socialise with one another. During the internship the social scene has improved as interns have become more comfortable with one another.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Considering that I live in a different country finding and paying for accommodation in London was expensive. Especially as I wanted to be close to work. Although we do get paid there is not a budget for accommodation. The area is a great place to live and work in but it does come at a cost! Drinks on nights out are expensive as well as everyday living from food to washing. However the area and perks outweighed the costs! At the end of the day despite the costs everyone managed to socialise and have a good time.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The nightlife in the area was great. Some really good pubs and bars in the area - in some places there are good RBS and corporate rates however still very expensive in comparison to University and non city prices. Being located close to Shoreditch was also helpful for interns on the weekends if they wanted to go out.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were a range of external activities from bowling to playing golf. All which were good fun and the nibbles and drinks always help! A potential suggestion could be weekly events rather than having events every 3 weeks...
