    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • It has been highly enjoyable so far. My project has been engaging and degree related, likewise my colleagues are all willing to help when needed. There is a diverse group of people around too which always adds to the fun.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • There is a bit of colleague interaction, however as an intern it is mainly with interns or other people when you require information. I think it is a case of 6 of one and half a dozen of the other. We don't branch out too far, but then neither do others around us.

    3/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Given the nature of my project (Very research based) I have been left to my own devices. There has been input from above, however have found my daily manager too busy to really give the support needed and my project manager, as great as he is, was not able to give much guidance either as this project reached outside of his expertise. Never the less, it has been great to be let loose on my own and thus I would not count a four out of ten as a massive negative.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • It varies. At the start, relatively busy with training for 2 weeks. Week 3-4 I was waiting for equipment which took a while to obtain, so more self-learning. But then since then, consistently busy.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • My project has been very independent and thus I have been given a lot of responsibility for my own work. Given its research nature, I have been given a real opportunity to show what I am made of.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • For the project I had to learn a whole new branch of maths and how to use it, quite quickly. It was really interesting learning relatively advance maths for operational use. Given this platform I am hoping to pursue this branch further if my university has the modules available.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere is definitely one constructed for hard work. To the people who know one another there is a good buzz, but it is definitely more towards the end of hard work than relaxed. In amongst the coding and reading there is plenty of time to meet with others for a quick coffee break.

    3/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Personally, I have had no issues with the organisation of the internship. In fact it has been very well put together, up until the acquiring of special equipment. Partly this is due to the abnormalities in my project manager's calendar, with meetings etc. causing the delay, but overall it was very well set up.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • They really seek to develop you as an individual and a potential future employee. There is plenty of development training in many areas and a real opportunity to learn as much as you can. Information is available in an abundance, sometimes you just need to ask.

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    Company Parties/Events

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Detica have a high post internship employment rate, and I can only hope to be apart of that statistic.

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • I work in between the Guildford and London office. In Guildford there is less happening come evening times, whilst London way there always seems to be offers of dinners here and there. So far however I have been too busy with friends and family to really delve in.

    3/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • London and Guildford are quite expensive areas. If you look in the right places though, there is always something to find.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Personally I do not know. Nightlife for me so far has consisted of a few dinners here and there with friends, which has been great in a place like London/Guildford.

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There are quite a lot of sports clubs and socials to get involved with, if you take an initiative.

    4/5
