The Role
It was a good placement especially in terms of duration, 10 weeks, was long enough to fit In and become used to the settings/ the job. You could definitely see the improvement in your work by the end of the internship.
I received good feedback on my completed tasks, and also the fact that my work was being used felt like a 'success' !
Unlike some of the other interns, the area I was working in, didnt come under a specific business unit, therefore I wasn't involved in some of the extra training/ activities that others received.
There were periods where I would be very busy, and other times when I didn't have much to do.
I was given administrator privileges to update live pages on the companies intranet. A lot of the time I was given a task, and then had to go about achieving it by myself, ( although there were people could ask if i became stuck) . This included me calling up important people within the company and making decisions that I thought were best.
It made me better understand a working environment and the amount of work that much be put in. Also it gave me a better insight into consulting, which has allowed me to determine what career I would be suited to when I graduate. I have definitely become more confident since the internship, as I was having to network at events and speak to people on the phone and in meetings, many of which i had only previously spoken to by email. These are situations when being quiet and nervous doesn't pay off!!
The Company
The office was a number of hot desks, this meant that it was hard to always see the same people, and also made the atmosphere a little less friendly. Especially when you weren't sure where people you needed were going to be located.
Relatively organised, although some confusion meant that my work area, didn't come under a specific business unit. this meant i wasn't on the intern mailing lists, so I wasn't always invited to events that actually would have been relevant for my work.
There were some opportunities to go on courses, however these were not always relevant for every intern, and many required time away from projects.
Company Parties/Events
A number of the interns recieved job offers after completion of their degrees, for those like myself who still were at university, were offered another internship the following summer.
The Culture
There were a number of internship drinks, and we were also invited to the graduate events. A number of the interns would meet up for lunch during the week also, and dinner some evenings.
Moderate, cost to commute was high, and the number of times people, would eat out for lunch meant that weekly spending was high.
Not many events within my business unit, more within consulting, that I could sometimes go to.
There were a couple of groups, however these seemed more set up for employees than interns.
