About You
Fantastic opportunity, had many varied activities which were fully relevant to the insight week and which furthered my interest in the industry. The initially organisation was a little messy in that emails were sent in the wrong order but once i arrived it was really great.
The graduates are really valued at RBS and as a week intern i felt the same appreciation. The staff really want to get along and help you - teach you as much as you want to be taught and treat you as a fellow employee if not of higher importance.
The first two days were training which provided the grounds for rotations on the second two days. Although the rotations were tricky, it was also a chance to ask questions and use our initiative.
As well as many intricacies of the investment banking world and the types of products they sell, there was a huge emphasis on 'soft skills' - mainly communication. The first session was about networking and involved alot of working on social skills and awareness of other peoples needs. I will take these particular skills on with me for life and will be invaluable in any other career i choose to take.
The Company
As with any course involving a large number of people there were adjustments made throughout the week but any adjustments that were made , were done so efficiently and i was informed well in advance. It was nice to not be told too much about the insight week before arrival as it made it more exciting and surprising when it began.
There was a good variation between hard concentration and working rotations and a social aspect to the week. There were many opportunities to participate in social events in the evening where we could speak amongst employees, fellow interns in a relaxed and social environment which was a nice change from the intensity of the working day. Also it was great to see how enthusiastic the staff were about the interns which furthered our enthusiasm and made it a more enjoyable atmosphere to be working in.
Living outside the london area i had accommodation and transport paid for which i imagine was very costly to the firm just so that i was able to attend. Furthermore i was provided with numerous 'work packs' and sessions in order to develop my current knowledge and teach me more about RBS itself.
Working along side people actually getting on with their day to day job and seeing the types of demands they have to deal with is the only real way to give a true insight into somebody's job and daily-routine. Furthermore the graduates were more than happy to divulge into conversation about their work and what type of experiences they have previously experienced in their job. Thus this information allowed me to form my own mindset about the firm and what it would be like in the working world and having a role within RBS
The most i took away from the week was probably the culture of RBS - a very team-working ethos where social compatibility is one of their core attributes.
It made me incredibly excited for entering the workforce and allowed me to see specific roles which i would want to adopt in my career.
Everything Else
Paid for a weeks accommodation and travel
Networking was a main emphasis of the week and the final day included drinks with the people we had worked with and more in order to meet and develop relationships with workers at RBS.
Although cheesy a 'quiz night' really relaxed everybody and the food and drinks were great.
