The Role
I very much enjoyed working at Houlder. The work was interesting and applicable to my degree and fellow employees were a pleasure to work with.
The projects I worked on were important to complete and my colleagues treated me like a regular employee, which was great.
My supervisor was available and willing to help. When he wasn't in the office, colleagues provided as much help as they could provide.
Between projects there was some downtime, but generally I was quite busy on a day-to-day basis. It was not an overwhelming amount of work, but a good amount to stay busy but not stressed.
I was working on a small project with just me and my supervisor, so the work was almost completely completed by me. I was also sent on-site for a project in which it was myself and one other engineer, giving me a great deal of responsibility.
Learning to work with people on-site was a great experience, as well as the various software and project I worked on technically. Both technical and "soft" skills well developed. Also good experience of working with and adapting to different cultures in the office
The Company
Very busy floor in the office, but employees still enjoy chatting over a coffee (or beer in the pub on Thursdays!). Great group of people and mix of nationalities
Could have been more assistance with helping international students with accommodations and visa requirements but otherwise very well organized communication and organization with the process.
Good time given for learning curve on new software and no problem getting specific licenses for necessary programs. No formal training was given throughout my term, however. Might be nice to send interns to a conference when possible.
National Travel
Company Parties/Events
Future employment wasn't specifically discussed, but mentioned in passing. As well, several employees (and even managers) have been interns with the company in the past.
The Culture
Every Thursday evening employees gather at the pub (varying numbers per week) and often a party/dinner for employees leaving, etc.
Central London is quite expensive, but that is expected of the area!
Lots of nice pubs/restaurants around the office area, however can be quite pricey as mentioned above. Not a far ride on the tub to lots of good clubs and bars though!
There were no company organized events through my internship. However, I believe in the summertime there are often events/activities.
