The Role
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my placement at Houlder Ltd. One of the main reasons for my satisfaction was that I was able to apply knowledge that I had acquired during the first two years of my course (Mechatronics & Robotics) to an array of interesting, original and technically challenging projects
From day one I felt that I was a fully integrated member of the Houlder team. Colleagues would trust me to fulfil my duties and would support me when I had queries.
I was trusted to carry out tasks complex tasks, and whenever I had a query regarding a certain problem my supervisor would take considerable time ensuring that I fully understood the issue at hand. This not only enabled my to perform my job to a higher standard but also meant that I learned a lot of valuable tips from experienced engineers throughout during my placement.
Due to the nature of the work at Houlder, the level of work varied depending on the number of ongoing projects. During quiet periods I was involved in producing technical specifications for tender documents to assist with finding additional projects. Additionally I worked on some internal research and development projects.
In most cases I was given the same responsibility as the other engineers within the control team.
The skills developed during my placement strongly correlate with my degree program. For example I was heavily involved with using the LABVIEW programming environment and the Soldiworks software package, both of these form a considerable part of certain modules within my course. Additionally the management and quality control procedures are applicable most future projects, both within by programme and beyond.
The Company
For the most part there was a positive atmosphere in the office. Everyone at Houlder is extremely welcoming, friendly and easy to get along with.
I was the first placement student the control department had acquired, despite this the placement seemed well organised.

The Culture
As I was employed in the North East, the cost of living is generally low, I personally lived in an apartment in the centre of Newcastle, this meant that the rent was slightly higher than other alternatives in the outskirts, however it meant that my commute to work was much simpler.
There is excellent nightlife in Newcastle.
During my placement I was involved in a variety of activities and societies outside of work.
