    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • They provided a good mix of work which wasn't just basic tasks for interns, but things that made a real difference to the company

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I was treated like a member of the team I was working with, involved in all the team meetings etc.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I was able to talk to anyone about any questions on a regular basis, and had a comprehensive review of my time there at the end.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • They asked me to set my own targets for time, which was tough, but meant that I could work at the pace I needed to.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given tasks that had an impact on the company, but I think they would have coped fine without me.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • It will be really helpful having skills at programming going forward. I didn't have any experience before, but now feel ready to take on programming challenges.

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Standard office atmosphere, occasionally some good chats, people seemed friendly on the whole.

  • Very organised, no problems, they even set up housing for interns.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • They provided a lot of personal support, and even more was available if I'd tried it.

  • They made clear at the end of the placement that I wasn't suited for a job with them. The clarity was very helpful.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Since the interns lived together in houses, it made social interaction easy.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • London prices aren't great, but it was a good tradeoff for the location. The company provided very reasonable housing for interns, which helped hugely.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Enfield itself isn't that great, but London was a short train journey away.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Lots of different opportunities at MetaSwitch - sports, board games, etc all available.
