The Role
Really insightful and a good way to see what a career in banking is really like - not so keen on the early mornings personally but had a really fantastic experience.
At my first trading desk rotation I felt like 'the intern' and people did not seem to want to talk too much but after changing desks I moved to a really friendly area with lovely people who were a pleasure to work with.
Had the best line manager in e-commerce who answered any questions I had and talked me through any job I was doing to make sure I understood. My sponsor was always willing to go for a coffee if I ever needed to chat and even helped to arrange for excel tutorials in things to speed up the work I was doing.
Always had plenty of things to be getting on with and on a few days due to organised events and charity fundraising was extremely busy but desk were really understanding when this happened since I had finished all tasks I had been asked to do.
Not completely running the show as I don't think that would have been possible but definitely was allowed to do daily projects that I would have had to do if I worked there and was allowed to talk to key members from all over the bank. Trully great way to see almost every role involved.
The best experience I have received in any work experience/internship programme. The networking skills are an absolutely crucial life lesson for anyone and through them have met some amazing people at RBS. I've learnt excel skills to help me through any dissertation data collection and I have made some friends for life!
The Company
Was very quiet for some periods as many people go on holiday over the period I was there but the olympics and general atmosphere of London made up for that.
Internship is very well set up and if there are ever any problems with the placement there is always someone who is willing to help change things for you.
Not a lot of training as you tended to learn on the desk the skills you need. However, they did organise an excel course if you asked for one which I thought was fantastic.
Company Parties/Events
I would love to be hired by RBS but given the current economic downturn and restructuring it makes graduate placements tough to get.
The Culture
Amazing bunch of interns. Easy to talk to any of them and always able to meet up outside of work for sightseeing or just a chat.
One of the downsides of London is the price of everything. Very expensive place to live but the salary more than covered it.
I come from an area of limited nightlife so the London scene came as quite a shock. There is always something to do here, whether it is visiting a comedy club, west end show, pub or club, there is never a dull moment!
If you are in the Markets programme then you should always have free weekends (unless you couldnt finish work during the week) and your evenings tend to be free too. So there are plenty of opportunities to arrange activities or do other things so long as they don't affect your work performance.
