    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Like any job there was days which were tougher than others but generally speaking it was a fantastic experience and one I would recommend. The learning oppurtunities were enourmous-I learned more in 2months with BP than in my previous years at Uni!

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Towards the end of my Internship in particular my colleagues could see the value I could offer them with my experience in the area I was working on. Work that would have taken them a day to track down and complete, now takes under an hour thanks to the work I have completed.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My line manager was fantastic and every other member of the team was happy to answer questions. It is important to get the right balance in this area as you have to be able to demonstrate you can do things for yourself but any time I had taken something as far as I felt I could my line manager was happy to correct my course. It is important to note that I was always guided to how I could help myself rather than someone coming in and taking over my piece of work which is obviously a lot more valuable.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was always busy enough that I had two or three things to do but never felt so pushed that it became an issue. Generally speaking theres always extra work available if you complete the your original work.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Safety is a priority for BP therefore it is important that we work together to ensure the safety of people on-site. For that reason it clearly would not be appropriate to hand a massive amount of responsibility to an Intern, any work you do is checked over throughly by more experienced people above you. At the same time, the work which I completed was very important for the future operations and therefore you feel like you have to get it done to add value to the company.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • As I said previously the work I completed was more valuable than the years I had spent learning things at Uni! Training on complex computer programs and presentation skills training will stand me in good stead wherever my career takes me. The soft skills developed in terms with work with other people and identifying those that may be able to assist with a problem will also prove invaluable I'm sure.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The office is clearly a place of work so the fun isn't exactly non-stop and nor should it be. The atmosphere in general was great but and you soon pick up when the appropriate time to crack some jokes and join in with the conversations is. It is a very relaxed atmosphere-you feel comfortable working in it.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The overall organisation of the internship was fantastic. Information was communicated to me regularly and I knew exactly where and when I had to be places. From a local perspective my manager provided a great briefing and was always available to point me in the right direction for things.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The company invested a lot of money ensuring that I had every oppurtunity available to me. Money was a non-issue, the priority was to provide me with every oppurtunity.

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Subsidised Canteen

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    National Travel

    Company Parties/Events

    5/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I am currently awaiting an assessment centre which will factor in to whether I get a job with BP but I am certainly keen to!

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • The graduates working within my team were always happy to organise something-cinema,meals,trips to the beach etc. Some of these experiences were as important as any within work as they helped develop excellent relationships which made me far more comfortable within the office.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • My area was very cheap, although since BP has internships all over the UK that really depends on where they decide to place you. It is possible to signal a preference, and generally speaking northern students stay north if they want to and the southern students stay south.

    5/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • There was not too much nightlife in my local area but around twenty minutes away there area a lot of good pubs and clubs for weekends.

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Usually there would be the oppurtunity to do one social activity a week, which is about the right amount. Having a social activity on a work night is tough because your tired from working all day but one a week seemed about right.
