    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Really did love it. Loved meeting people, learning the business, being pushed to the limits mentally and physically (tiredness) and taking on the tasks of presenting to senior people.

    5/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Very valued throughout. Admittedly, this varied from desk to desk but overall, the amount of times people asked how things were going, went to the effort of putting me in touch with colleagues was overwhelming.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • The HR have a serious understanding of how you are progressing, giving you honest and direct feedback and being clear on areas for improvement. The support given on the back of this is very open: use your buddy, dean and contacts to meet other people or to better understand different areas. The Desk Reps who supervised on a daily basis again really made you feel valued and hence offered their guidance about how to go about tasks or meeting new people. Though, this did depend on the desk, how busy they were and how many Desk Reps there were.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Always had work to do. Only on my first rotation on one occasion was I sat with nothing to do. Here though it was encouraged that you take the initiative to go and sit with members of the team.

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Well I wasn't quite running the show. I'm not sure responsibility is the right word, given how little value you can actually add to the employees day jobs. But daily tasks included speaking in every morning meeting on the previous days news, pitching stocks and carrying out some large presentations at the end of the second rotation. A lot of the developing my understanding came from taking the initiative to approach people and ask to sit with them.... the responsibility here lies with you as a person and how keen you are to learn.

    3/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Developed further confidence and guidance on how to deliver formal presentations. Really enjoyed this and will take it on to future roles. The initial training will not be used again but the on-the-job training certainly will, i.e. learning how to carry out tasks on the computer and the knowledge of the business.

    5/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Love the trading floor! Very exciting, intense and yet collegial feel to the place to.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The running of the programme is so smooth. The structure of it really reflects the behind the scenes thought and effort, with lots of planned talks and presentations as well as the rotations being carefully selected. Everyone from the business has clearly been briefed and expects interns to show an interest and ask questions.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The firm invests heavily in you, though not through formal training but on the job training. The people try very hard to ensure that you leave the internship having an understanding of what they do and how it fits in with other areas. This is the training which is more valuable. The development of my knowledge and when I felt most invested in was sat at the desk when people asked how things were progressing or gave there time to sit down in a room and explain concepts to me.

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised/Company Gym

    Company Parties/Events

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Well I can't choose 'got a job with them' as don't know yet. But number 9 means I would love a job with them! The diversity of people, values upheld at the firm and sharpness of the people all inspired me to want to work around those people.

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • The final night.

    2/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Not as bad as expected but still more costly that us northeners are used to.

    2/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Depends where in London you go.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Charity events, football in the evenings.

    4/5
