The Role
The work I was doing was genuinely worthwhile and, if I was not there, would have to have been completed by my manager anyway. In this way, I feel I was given real responsibility and that the final outcome of my project will genuinely affect BP.
Colleagues genuinely valued my effort and were extremely helpful. By the time I was nearing the end of my placement, I even had some people asking me for help with issues!
Absolutely great. Almost without exception people were willing to spare 10 minutes to sit down and help me with my work, explain a concept or help me to develop me skills. Of course there were times when colleagues were busy, but they always managed to fit me in at a later date. Saying that, I was given plenty of independence to develop my own ways of working.
For the first 9 of 11 weeks, my project kept me wholly occupied. As I began to finish, I had less to do, but there were still other less-major tasks that I was able to complete.
The decision that I came to will have a genuine affect on BP. I presented my work in front of higher management and it is looking incredibly likely that they will follow through with my recommendation.
I have greatly enhanced my software and programming skills whilst I am here, and these would be applicable across a wide range of industries. Furthermore, BP gave training in giving presentations and this is incredibly important in all aspects of life. Lastly, there were many lunch and learn sessions held which gave useful insights into all aspects of the oil and gas industry and beyond.
The Company
Very busy office, and most people clearly engaged and passionate about the work they do.
The scheme BP has set up has been going for many years now and they have seemingly ironed out all the potential issues with this experience. From the interview stage right the way through to the end, it went very smoothly.
They flew me across the Atlantic for interview for a start! There have been several lunch and learn sessions, as well as individual guidance on giving presentations.
Subsidised Canteen
Company Parties/Events
Above 25 days holiday
BP has invested a lot of time and money into us and it would appear that they really want to follow through with this.
The Culture
Yes, the vast majority of placement students live together and therefore there is plenty of socialising that goes on.
Socialising is not expensive, though accommodation is not the cheapest.
The clubs are not very good at all.
Yes they host sports days, dinner dances.
