The Role
I really enjoyed my placement at BP. I was given a real project which if I had not done, would have been done by an engineer. The Dyce building was a fantastic location to work in. It was very light and the food was cheap and really high quality.
My colleagues were wonderful. They made an effort to approach me and make me feel comfortable when I was new. Throughout the internship they always had time to answer my constant questions. They brought me along to their meetings and anything that they felt would be interesting for me. We were invited to team meals and nights out and included like any other member of the team.
The support of my manager was really good. If I asked for support she would help but she wasn't their to hold my hand, which I preferred. However, the internship is during the holiday period and my manager was away for periods of time, some quite significant. Usually this wasn't a problem becuase she had deligated responsibility to another member of the team but, on occasion, they were also gone and I was stuck.
My project didn't require my full attention at all times. On some occasions I had to ask members of my team for extra work, which they provided if they had anything suitable. I filled the remaining times with exploring career options within the company and being involved in extra activities and events. If I had chosen to I could have spent a lot of time with little to do.
My project was a real piece of work and I was left to complete it. I was responsible for getting everything done, no-one was chasing me up constantly. However, I have no experience of what would have happened if I hadn't supplied what had been asked of me.
The skills I took away from my internship were all people related. My project didn't require a strong technical knowledge but did involve dealing with a lot of people. These skills and the lessosnt that I learnt will stay with me forever.
The Company
Everyone was always very busy but we did chat to each other. The office is open plan so you can see everyone. Friday afternoons we all stopped for cake for ten minutes.
I had no problem setting up my computers or phones, the team assistant was ready for our arrival. We were told all of the information we needed before arriving and there was an induction day on day one so we could meet everyone and get used to the building and the rules.
My manager reviewed me weekly and told me where I could improve.

There was a job for every intern if they met the required standard.
The Culture
We all lived in university halls together and went out each week. We often did things in the evenings rather than just sit and watch tv.
Living was cheap. There were loads of discounts for students. The rent was a bit expensive but not bad compaed to the amount earned on the internship.
There was a good mix of expensive and cheap bars and clubs. We tended to go to one club which had really cheap drinks.
Aberdeen had everything a larger city would have, nobody found that they had run out of things to do.
