    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I was given a project that carried real significance for my department. The placement was very well organised from start to finish with clear objectives.

  • I was warmly welcomed to the department. My team were always helpful, supportive and approachable. They were keen to see me succeed.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My manager happily helped me throughout my project. He provided good, clear guidance in terms of his expectations of me. We met formally on a weekly basis to discuss my progress.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • My project was sufficiently large so as to keep me busy. My manager also gave me a second project half way through the internship to ensure that I was always occupied. Over and above that, there were other activities with which to get involved in within the intern and challenger community.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • The results of my project had real implications for my department. I was given the opportunity to make decisions that would impact the department.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I have gained a lot of technical knowledge relating to the oil and gas industry which will undoubtedly be valuable in years to come. The placement gave me the opportunity to apply some of the knowledge I have gained through university in a real life setting.

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere was relaxed. Everybody in the office was friendly and clearly happy with their jobs.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The process was well organised all the way through. Before the internship started we were given recommendations for accomodation so that all the interns could live together. We also had an induction day and regular updates from HR with regards to expectations and deadlines for assessments.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • We were allocated a mentor who was available to help guide you through the process. There were regular training opportunites, including a Presentation Skills session. Some interns got the opportunity to go offshore.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • If you do well in the internship, you are offered a graduate job with the company. There are graduate jobs available for all of the interns if you meet work to the standard expected of the company.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Many of the interns lived in the same accomodation which was the perfect opportunity to get to know one another. We went on day trips at the weekend and had regular nights out. Social activities included walking in the Cairngorms, go-karting, rock climbing, weekly football matches, cinema outings and much more.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Aberdeen is slightly more expensive to live than other places. However, the salary comfortably covered the living costs leaving me with plenty for the coming year at university.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • There were always nights out at the weekends. There were plenty of pubs and clubs. Cheap drinks were especially easy to find on the Thursday evening of our flexi-weekend.

  • BP had several activities running out with work including sports days and charity events.
