    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Once aclimatised this internship allows you the opportunity to develop your autonomy within a professional organisation and balances self reliance with working in a team and recieving help. The very fact it streches the traditional capacities asked of you in a role provides stumbling blocks and head aches but is more than made up for by the opportunities for development.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • The nature of contributing in a self managed way which places emphasis on your autonomy means the value placed on you by your colleges comes from a certain extent by your offering to help. It is important to state as an intern the role is primarily an opportunity to learn rather than contribute in a material fashion. Through cultivating an open, honest relationship with your colleges you are better placed to get on well, rather than assuming a satus that inevitably comes with experience. I cultivated that relationship.

    4/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • The nature of managment encouraged my own development and in many ways the lessons sunk in more deeply as I was the one that was creating them. While the emphasis was on making your own impact the support was available when required with an expectation of active learning from each project you took part in.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • The work varied on a basis of what projects were going on at a specific time, which area I was rotated in and what level of work I had taken on.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • The empahsis was placed on learning and development, and if you seeked a lot of responsibilty in the coroporate department you would be gonig against the grain.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The self awarness was increased, insights and perspectives reviewed with access to many high level people and the opportunity to ask questions and learn from them.

    5/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • A supportive environment with interesting people. It took time to make an impact with everyone and the rotational nature may disrupt the realtionships you forge however this encourages you to stay on your toes. The slow nature of the market meant flagship deals were limited however reviewing particular sensitive clients was very interesting.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • It gave you the opportunity to learn from a wide range of people and develop an apprciation of the high level strategic nature of the orgnaisation. There were times when I had little to do and perhaps it was not as task orientated as I would wish. Its benefits were useful looking back.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Presentations and overnight accomadation in London on multiple ocassions, regular reviews and access to high status people within the company who were prepared to talk infomally about there career and motivations behind it.

    3/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • National Travel

    Company Parties/Events

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Job offer is likely made available if the desire and ability to work for them is present.

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • One external post work drinks event was organised for graduates from RBS and a variety of professional firms with the drinks and food provided for by RBS.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Somehow the money has largely gone. Although this does not suprise me looking at my past record. Birmingham is fine cost wise - however regular train travel slightly eats away.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Birmingham is great.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Intern socials were organised throughout the internship with a variety of events taking place in London.
