    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • It was enjoyable but very slow to get going at the beginning. I think this is unlike any other internships: only because I was in the construction division which is not totally suitable for interns.

    3/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • They were very friendly and helpful. I felt I could talk to them honestly and they would help me out. One of them put me in touch with contacts for discussing PhD funding which was very helpful.

    4/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My manager was very busy and so I found guidance from other members of the team. I expected a more hands on approach but this has been sorted out now and I am getting my supervision from two other people.

    2/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • At the start I had very little to do but now I have a lot to do. From one extreme to another! I would have preferred more balance to it.

    1/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • When I did work for someone it was real work which needed to be doing and they trusted my work and did not check it all over again. I would have felt more comfortable if my tasks were more linked but I can understand that is hard in construction.

    3/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • It has made me more professional and has taught me the importance of meetings in the organisation. It has taught me mainly how a big organisation operates. I feel it has not stretched my engineering knowledge though which is slightly disappointing.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The leatherhead office was very nice but not very exciting. However, this is not that important: you can't have everything.

    2/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The organisation was quite bad. At first I felt neglected but by the end I felt much happier about my experiences. I only got my objectives three or four weeks into the internship.

    2/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Lots of training was available to me such as presentation trainings and lunch and learn sessions which were very valuable. I felt that money was no object in terms of what they would have paid for me to do sessions. The only downside was that Leatherhead was quite isolated from the head office.

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Subsidised Canteen

    Company Parties/Events

    Above 25 days holiday

    5/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I would actually recommend a job definitely. My internship was not representative of the opportunities available and they will definitely reward you handsomely!

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There was a good social scene and if I wanted to I could have (and should have got to know more people) but I had lots to do outside of my job so I didn't put that much effort in.

    3/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • LONDON! Hello!!! But I don't mind that as I live there anyway. I knew the downsides of london.

    2/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • London has an amazing nightlife. It caters for everyone: you have central london, camden and then east london so you can't really go wrong.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • I was always getting emails about opportunities such as the poster competition and the young scientist day which I attended. You can always be busy at BP!
