The Role
I was placed in a team called Risk Systems Strategy. As a strategy team, all of my collegues had been at the bank for a long time and had sound knowledge of the risk systems used (necessary for such a role). It meant that coming into the team with no experience, there was little work for me to get stuck in with. As a result I was left completing mediocre tasks.
My team were really supportive of me and my work (especially my line manager). Even the simplest of tasks such as writing minutes were really valued by my collegues.
No matter what the task was, I was given full support. My collegues were really approachable and were always on hand to help me when needed.
Due to the type of team I was in, there was often very little work for myself to do. There was often long periods of time where I had no work to complete at all.
Again, due to the type of team I was placed in, little responsibility was was given to me. However, I do know that other interns within RBS were given lots of responsibility and really enjoyed it.
I don't think that the skills I have learnt here will help me in any way whilst studying for my degree. However, it has been a great opportunity to get involved in a team and see what working for a large corporation is really like.
The Company
My office had a very relaxed atmosphere. Everyone was really friendly and always up for a joke.
I think the internship was fairly well organised. I would, however, of liked to have seen a few more networking events. There was also a few issues with Risk interns, such as myself, being placed in inappropriate teams. You have to remember that you will be placed in a team for the 10 weeks and even if you don't like it, you have to get on with it. A few interns this year were not offered a job because they showed that they didn't like/enjoy the teams they were in, instead of making the most of the opportunity.
The only face-to-face training we had was at the start of the internship. This was a 2-day introduction, which in all honesty was a complete waste of time. Most of the interns, including myself, have not used nor come across any of the material given to us whilst on the induction.
RBS is a really great company to work for. I have been unfortuante in the team I have been placed in, however I definitely would like to come back and work for them after my degree.
The Culture
All the interns are ALWAYS up for going out, along with some of the grads!
London is extremely expensive, although RBS do offer their interns a good salary.
I haven't had much experience of the nightlife ... but come on, it is London after all.
There were few things that interns could get involved with. Most things were orgainised by the interns, for the interns.
