    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • 5/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Everyone was very friendly and welcoming when I first arrived. However I was never assigned an official budddy/mentor which meant it was quite confusing in terms of who to turn to during the first week. Nevertheless I did feel valued by my colleagues

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Again no specific person was outlined to me as a buddy / mentor. However when working on specific clients you have an in-charge. They are very helpful and the person to turn to should you get stuck at all.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • This depended on whether you were assigned to work on a client or not. If you were (as the case was most of the time) you were busy. However if not you had to find your own work. I found this quite a useful time to exploit the opportunity of the experience by finding work wherby I shadowed a partner or spent a day in a different department.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • You are given responsibility to interact with clients and for putting together audit reports. In some cases your work is not reviewed word for word so there definitely is responsibility given to you.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The skills developed from just working in a professional environment and interacting with representatives from other companies are very valuable. Additionally skills in audit and accountancy are developed but don't expect to be an expert once you leave as you are not training for the ACA qualification as you would be if you were a graduate.

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • It is hard to say as the nature of the work means different people are in the office all the time (including yourself). I was finding even after 5 weeks there I was still meeting new people as we'd never crossed paths. Nevertheless there are definitely a few eccentric characters that brighten up the place significantly.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Initially I think it was poor. We had an amazing 2 day induction but when we got to the office there was nothing planned for us to do, our laptops hadn't arrived and no one knew who was responsible for us. However after the first week it became more structured. Because all the work done is client specific, being assigned one for a period of time means well structured tasks and clear objectives for you to achieve.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I felt the company invested a significant amount of money into me. Considering expenses for travel, overnight stay and food alongside offering many different online training programmes to us I think that KPMG invests heavily in their interns.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Future prospects look very appealing as all interns get a partner interview during the summer. Considering that you have two months experience to take into this interview you have a considerable advantage over those not on the vacation scheme.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Definitely. The Initial induction where all the interns from a region in the country (i.e. south) get together was a great highlight. Additionally the CSR days put on by the company with the same people are a great laugh. Within my office there was a great bond between the interns with us regularly meeting up and spending time outside of work together.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Fortunately I went to university in the city I interned in so had a house already. Though it can be noted that cost wise, Bristol sits somewhere between cheaper than London and more expensive than the rest of the country.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Night-life in Bristol Is very good. There is always something for everyone whatever day you go out.And with people travelling from quite far to go out in Bristol, don't be surprised if you meet up with interns from other regional offices.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There was always the possibility of playing sport each week (Softball, cricket). Additionally the company is big on CSR days. Mine consisted of going to Clapham common and helping out with preparation for the Olympic flame to pass by.
