The Role
I loved this internship, it has been the best intership I have ever completed and not only did I grow in confidence as an individual I really felt that the company cares about their employeeds and makes lots of effort for employees to have a great work/ life balance.
My collegues regularly held meetings and made time for me so that they could check I was on track and that I wasn't having any problems. They also thanked me for my work and even bought me a lovely gift at the end of my placement.
I had such a fantastic manager. He understood how nervous I was and talk me clearly through tasks and if I didnt understand a task he would take his time and take me back to the basics so that I wasnt wasting my time with work. He really made me feel part of the team.
I always had something to do. I was basically a collegue their. I had people ringing me everyday from offshore to suppliers to other employees, there was never a dull moment, and the way the company runs is that you can have coffees and informal meetings in their communal areas, its a lovely atmosphere.
After working a number of internships in the past, this placement by far has given me the most responsibility. I made decisions, I even changed a component in operation and I talked with suppliers to make decisions. Although my manager always checked my work, he really encouraged me to have more faith in my ability.
I am now entering the oil and gas industry and this placement really taught me what the industry is about and the challenges associated with the industry and whilst working within a large international company. The confidence and I gained and the communication skills I developed are invaluable.
The Company
Really nice and chilled out. I could talk to everyone. We had cakes for birthdays and we developed good working relationships. It was a lovely office to work in and people were very accepting even of students.
It couldn't have been planned any better. We knew where we were going and what our accomodation options would be for the summer and the relocation process was easy. I also got to live with the other interns for the summer as a result of the company being so well prepared. Contracts and the recruitment process was simple as well which made the whole process stress free.
The company invested in future qualifications for me and set up lunch and learns on a regular basis. I was given enough responsibility to push myself but not enough to drown with. I really feel BP look after their people.

Even after several offers from other oil and gas giants I have still remained with BP as I feel they offer a fantastic diverse structured graduate programme and I feel they have worked hard to develop an excellent work life balance. When I was young I always worked to get the best salary but you relaise over time that theres no point in earning loads of money if your always miserable and have no time to spend it. BP offer a wonderful stress free life as well as a great paid job.
The Culture
We went out every weekend and their was always something going on. From the Edinburgh fringe, to Inverness to rock climbing and hill walking, shopping trips, clubbing, bowling, there was something for everyone.
It was quite expensive to live in Aberdeen but that was expected as it is the oil and gas capital of Europe. But my salary was high enough for me not to worry about this.
Great, we went to loads of different bars and experience a wide range of nights out from rock clubs to cocktail bars, to jazz clubs and drum and bass nights.
There were balls and concerts that the company gave away free tickets for. There were also football teams that played numerous times a week.
