    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • During my time in propulsion, I designed and optimised various solid rocket motor designs. I also worked on Thrust Vector Control and Divert Attitude Control Systems, working with a range of teams and stakeholders across the business in order to produce the best possible designs for future products. Within Warheads, I worked in the modelling team - using various hydrocodes to simulate detonics and impacts. I helped develop various modelling capabilities, working closely with customers and suppliers. I was also able to be involved with various trials throughout my placement.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I have greatly developed existing skills in MATLAB and Python programming, including the use of machine learning algorithms. I have learned how to use various hydrocodes, including LS-DYNA and some other bespoke blast codes. This also involved using new CAD software for geometry preparation. In particular, this often meant using the Ansys and Hyperworks suites. My PowerPoint presentation and report writing skills have also greatly improved, particularly when involved in important presentations with customers or suppliers. I am now much more knowledgeable when it comes to the operation of rockets and weapon systems as a whole.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Yes. I was given the responsibility to look after a particular supplier on a certain project - organising regular meetings in order to explain requirements and possible issues etc. This also involved planning time, budget, and resources in order for us and the supplier to efficiently carry out all required tasks. I was also regularly involved with important meetings and presentations (often with the assistance of others) throughout my placement, allowing me to network with people from all across the business. This would involve discussing my work with stakeholders and planning the next steps.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • Lots. I was always able to ask questions and get a response quickly, even during the Warheads half of my placement which involved working more remotely. All colleagues were helpful and would often set aside time for discussions with me. My line manager was always good at checking my work before any presentations - suggesting improvements and further steps. Sometimes people were too busy to help at a specific moment - but that is to be expected for a big company with a large workload! Regardless, my colleagues would always make time to answer my questions or help, whether that was straight away or not.

  • How would you rate the support and guidance from your line manager?

  • How would you rate the support and guidance from the wider team?

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Very inclusive. There is an emphasis on inclusion and diversity, and everyone is very friendly and helpful. It is a great atmosphere to work in, where you can get involved with lots of events and develop great friendships. Good networks exist between employees on the Early Careers Programme, such that it is easy to organise out-of-work events. I was also assigned a 'buddy' as a point of contact during my placement - they were always helpful, friendly, and willing to answer questions.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I have really enjoyed my time at MBDA. It has been a great year, being involved with many teams, developing great connections and getting stuck into some really interesting project work. I would highly recommend it to anyone considering joining the company for a placement. Even as an undergraduate, there are chances to travel where possible (especially within Warheads), flexible working arrangements, and great benefits. I am highly likely to consider returning to MBDA as a graduate.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to MBDA
  • Make sure that you refresh yourself on your technical knowledge before you do an assessment centre. Some of the questions can be quite technical, but this depends on the department - for instance Warheads will not ask super technical questions as you probably won't ever have done anything detailed on explosives during your degree! Get involved with a few different opportunities whilst at the company - go to ECP events and get involved with ECP activities both inside and outside of work. Make sure to take up opportunities to travel and do things outside of your normal job when you can as well.
