    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • During the internship I was given a large variety of tasks, they could have involved reviewing a diagram, creating a visitor report for an overseas customer, matching System requirements to customer requests. These tasks could take between two weeks or a couple of days. I worked with a variety of people and departments.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I developed a variety of skills, you get to grips with Doors a Requirements Managing Software (something I had never heard of before starting), and I now know a lot more useful features of Microsoft. During the internship I think my manner of communication and confidence improved most. You learn how to approach people in a professional setting. You are also encouraged to do training courses, I did a short one on Matrix.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • I was given far more responsibility than expected, one of the documents I created (my first task) I saw after the ten weeks on the desks of people in charge of a certain project which was very rewarding. When I was there I genuinely felt like I was being helpful and a valued member of the team, rather than perhaps an inconvenience.

  • Please rate how meaningful the work you were doing was

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I received lots of support. It was always made sure that I had someone to check up on me, mostly this was my line manager, but also other members of the team once I had got to know them, or had taken on some of their tasks. I was always made to feel I could ask anything, or ask for clarification.

  • How would you rate the support and guidance from your line manager?

  • How would you rate the support and guidance from the wider team?

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The companies culture was nice, everyone was very friendly and kind. If I asked someone a question they would be happy to take time to answer it. I found sometimes it could be quite quiet due to dynamic working, but I made use of the dynamic working arrangements myself and loved it!

  • How would you rate the inclusiveness of the culture?

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I enjoyed the placement, the department I was in was very friendly and supportive. I learnt a lot about Systems engineering. The teams and teams surrounding me were very male dominated, which I hadn't expected, but perhaps should have with engineering! I'm not sure whether I'd pursue a career in Systems engineering after university, but it was a great first introduction to an engineering department and professional job.
