Overview
Day to day includes that of interacting with relevant stakeholders throughout the company in order to develop the architectural framework for future projects. Role is quite broad and get to see and meet with alot of different people within the business. Responsibilities mainly fall into the capture of architecture / requirements and usage of the engineering V cycle
Skills
Yes - absolutely, presentation skills foremost as engaging with people daily and showing off work / asking questions is a very important part of the job. Along side this is the communication for similar reasons, getting across points in a professional and constructive manner.
Responsibilities
Yes absolutely - at times I was the sole owner of specific parts of work which had great impact on the direction of certain projects. The responsibility fell entirely within what I felt comfortable with however. If there were activities which I felt I could engage in and lead then I was given the opportunity to, if I did not, then that was also fine.
Support & Guidance
Often at times my architecture work did not have a clear defined objective - however this is the nature of the job, not as a result of lack of guidance. Whenever I would approach the technical experts on subject matters their guidance was always very insightful. They always made time for me and valued my questions as though I were a regular employee
Culture
Within our department specifically, things were relaxed and social when in the office. There were not strict requirements to wear formal attire mostly because we are less customer facing than other areas. The same may not be said for more business oriented roles where the atmosphere may be a little more formal. There is a big drive within the company focusing on social events and networking
Your Impressions
At times I found the lack of direction off putting and leaving me confused as to what meaning my work actually provides. However as my network grew and I engaged with more people around the business I began to better understand the context of my role and how it influences projects
Yes
If you get through to the interview / assessment centre stages, be yourself, be confident and most of all be passionate. I believe the only reason I got the job was because I really cared about defence and engineering, and I think this made me stand out. If you have interests in weapon systems, tanks, planes, missiles or anything similar, strike up conversation with interviewers at an appropriate time if possible!
