Overview
Managing three busy inboxes, providing general administrative tasks such as answering student queries. Providing document support such as generating transcripts, grant agreements, or letters to support their visa applications. Hosting events to ensure students are informed about the programmes, well prepared before their departure or students are welcome to socialise.
Skills
I have developed my written communication skills as I managed a lot of administrative work, making me more efficient. Improved my public speaking as I can now present in front of a crowd with much more confidence with my content. Numeracy skills as it involved looking through different funding to identify suitable needs of students.
Responsibilities
By chance, yes. My line manager and another manager left the university which left myself and another student worker to run the office, essentially with a lot of independence.
Support & Guidance
My line manager was always welcoming with questions and was happy to send me to trainings and work shadowing which was really important to me. Having this much opportunity to try out different things but also have a friendly approach to providing help has been good.
Culture
The company culture is more relaxed than a typical corporate would be. It is serious when things needed to get done, but overall, the office was very friendly and I learned a lot from them even when it is not related to work.
Your Impressions
I enjoyed it a lot because there was a great work-life balance too.
Yes
Present yourself as best as possible and do not be discouraged if you are not successful! There are plenty of opportunities available at the uni, which is honestly something to be grateful for. Keep practicing your behavioural questions and especially brush up on any relevant tech software they require for the job because they most likely have a task on hand for you.
