    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • I am an intern with the relationship management working capital sales unit of production in the commercial banking division. I gain fresh knowledge every week about the numerous steps involved in creating a reliable connection with a potential client or improving one with a current one. I primarily work with the invoice finance team, where I can see how we help companies fund their debtors if the facility is suitable for them and the necessary due diligence.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • During a group project where we worked together to provide an original solution to hyper-personalize the way customers interact with money, I honed my presenting and teamwork skills. This improved my listening skills by allowing me to work as a team by absorbing all of their thoughts. I have also developed my ability to think critically by acquiring pertinent information from many sources, spotting potential hazards and problems within the information, and then coming up with ways to alleviate those problems.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • I did not have a lot of responsibility in the sense of having to finish any work or exercise any diligence. However, this internship was viewed more as a learning opportunity to gain transferable skills and the ability to work in a professional, orderly bank. Additionally, I was able to pick the brains of more seasoned individuals to gain insight into other professions, ask them any concerns I had, and take advantage of the chance to network within the bank.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • The teams I worked with were all incredibly encouraging and eager to provide any assistance or advice. Many people took the time to discuss any issues I was having or to simply offer general suggestions. I discovered that this attitude of support was widespread, and a good structure had been set up for interns, meaning that each of us had a graduate buddy we could check up with this week in addition to our line manager.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Every person was eager to pitch in and dedicate themselves to obtaining the greatest results for clients, thus there was a strong sense of a supportive and upbeat culture at work. The majority of workers, including those at higher levels, were quite personable, creating what felt like a really inclusive environment that fully supported the one bank thinking approach. I also discovered that the culture was quite supportive of my efforts to pursue lifelong learning.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I have thoroughly enjoyed spending time with different working capital sales teams since I have learned something new from each one. Along with that, I was able to network and pick up new skills, which went above and beyond what I thought was possible. Since I only interacted with clients during my last week, I could have loved it more if I had been given more responsibility to do projects and contribute to the team.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to NatWest Group
  • It is advisable to enter the company with an open mind because there will be numerous roles that you are unaware of but that are a good fit for your skill set and career goals. To increase your network and expertise, I would unquestionably advise asking plenty of questions and speaking with team members from various backgrounds. Additionally, I would suggest trying something new to push yourself because it will give you a fresh new outlook on the bank.
