The Role
Really good job - I did this placement partly in order to see if I would enjoy being in a lab all day. Turns out I do
was made to feel an important part of the team, people would trust me to perform tasks on my own where appropriate
Whenever I had a question people were always happy to give me answers, even when they were busy. It was also useful to be in an environment with many people to ask who all knew a lot about chemistry
Generally pretty busy, I always had something to do and my supervisor made sure I always had back up things I could be doing. There were times when I was very busy but I was never rushed, always given enough time to do things
Trusted to perform tasks I had done before. I was responsible for my own chemistry and sometimes was involved in deciding what chemistry to perform. It would have been nice to be more involved however.
I feel much more confident in the lab and I believe myself to be a much better practical chemist than my friends from uni who did not do a placement. The skills I have learned this year will be a great help in my future carrer
The Company
Office was quite quiet but this normally helped if I was doing work. We were free to play music in the lab
Everyone knew who the placement students were and their abilities.
GSK seemed to really take an interest in getting the most out of the students while at the same time taeching them the skills needed to work in pharma.
Flexi Time
Subsidised/Company Gym
Above 25 days holiday
I am aiming at an acedemic future, I would definatly consider a job offer though
The Culture
Many events organised by various students mainly trough GSK IP facebook group
I used to live in London, it's cheaper in stevenage but not by a whole lot
Do not go to Chicago's. Go to London. London is great.
There may be some if I looked harder but I wasn't involved
