    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • My role was as a Product Safety Engineer for & ES, this daily invovled looking at the legislation and regulation register, writing up safety case reports and organising Hazard reviews. I also worked on the WTA safety team which involved checking the incidents reports, running level 1 Safety assessments as well as doing safety surveys onboard ship.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Yes I learnt how organise and run meeting with team members that have higher qualification then myself. I learnt how to project manage while working on Stretch projects, organsing a tema of 6 and connecting them to the correct people whilst meeting deadlines. I got involved with training and grew my Matlab and CAD skills whilst with the company. I also learnt how to ensure a product is Compliant and safe to use.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The general culture was good, supportive and encouraging to young people. My first office however was not a good atmosphere with people slacking and lying and generally not having any team moral. However my second office was good, encouraging, welcoming and supportive.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I really didn't enjoy it, the team i worked with constantly shifted and changed with no solid work, my line manager was confusing and difficult to work with being a bad communicator. The office environment was very much fend for yourself with no team moral. I also felt the support to move and change amongst teams was limited not allowing for a different experience within the limited 1 year industrial period time frame. I also didn't enjoy the work my team did, often working on boring projects being given the excel work sheet. It was hard as well because my team didn't have enough intern like work to offer other then administrative opportunities. So most of the work I did could have been done by an admin assistant rather then someone with engineering knowledge. I did manage to find opportunities that I enjoyed and learnt from. The stretch opportunities allowed for leadership, development and networking .
