    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • As a Preclinical Science Intern, I was responsible for conducting and designing laboratory experiments, as well as supporting experimental research projects currently underway in the laboratory. Outside the laboratory, I analyzed and reported experimental results. I also had some desk-based activities related to competitor research.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I received lots of training in the lab, including cell culture training and training on various cytotoxicity assays. As well as this, there was lots of training available on various software and machinery. From the Placement team, I received training throughout the year on presentation skills, which has improved my confidence. I have also developed my event organization skills.

  • Yes, I designed and managed a 5-month long lab project independently. I also had an ongoing independent research project.

  • I couldn't have asked for a more supportive network during my time at BAT. Staff were always friendly and happy to book some time to help me if I got stuck with anything.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Everyone is very friendly and makes an effort to get to know you when you join. The staff all seem passionate about what they are doing, and everyone is happy to show you around their lab/workspace. It is encouraged that you explore and work with whatever department takes your interest most.

  • I thoroughly enjoyed the placement at BAT and I feel now excited and prepared for work after university. If I am offered the opportunity to return, I definitely will.
