Overview
- Developing systems architecture - Using MBSE to model relevant systems of interest - Helping run the day-to-day project needs as well as supplying content for wider reviews (weekly, monthly, quarterly)
Skills
New: - Systems Engineering (MBSE, use of MBSE programmes) - Product lifecycle management Developed - Work-life balance - Task management (juggling multiple tasks at once)
Responsibilities
Not particularly no. You were assigned tasks but these were never solely your responsibility. No project responsibility and no ownership given to the individual.
Support & Guidance
Dependent heavily on the team. Some people manage working from home very well and others do not and this showed. If they could manage it well then the support and guidance was excellent but if not (and this was particularly pertinent at the start of the placement) then there was no support and you were left to fend for yourself.
Culture
General atmosphere again depended on team. If there was a nice coherence to the team with everyone working for each other and not for their own personal gain then it was excellent. However, some managers can utilise your work (especially as an undergraduate with no standing in the company) for their own gain without giving you credit. Note though that this is very team dependent.
Your Impressions
I have very much enjoyed my placement. This year was to find out what I do and do not like and despite finding that I do not like the specifics of what I have done day-to-day; I recognise it as an extremely useful skill to have learnt and will treasure it throughout my career.
Yes
Dive in to as many extra-curricular opportunities that you can, it gives you work to be doing outside of your immediate remit and when this inevitably dries up from time-to-time, it keeps you busy and motivated. If you don't think you will like an activity, do not write it off immediately, try it first and then make a decision. It could prove you wrong.
